It would have been nice to include some manners for whoever was willing along to come and dedicate their time to this modification...

Do the [left]/[right]/[center] tags not function with [img] tags?

Yes, they do function with IMG tags. Boofo made a nice mod that wraps the text around a aligned IMG:
