How can I have the login area/above the navbar show "Your Notifications" instead of just the "Private Messages", such as the image shown below...

Edit the navbar template. Remove the conditionals around the popup code, and the link code.

Note this is automatic in 3.7. Assuming you have any notifications, it says "Your Notifications".
