The social aspect of WoW - though very rewarding - is also the part you have to be most careful with. The central problem (IMHO) is that you can't just pause like with a normal PC game. If you are in a group doing an instance or raid it can take several hours, and they are real people who you don't want to let down and quit on.
What I'm finding useful is to budget my time, letting my wife know that I will be doing an instance, or alternatively letting my guild or pug know that I might not be able to play all the way through. It's very addictive, but that's not a bad thing in an of itself. That just means it's a lot of fun. I also watch too much TV, and eat too many gummy bears. Freet lvl 70 Prot Warrior (Tank) Arathor |

Lucky for my husband, I play also and understand. So, he'll let me know he's running an instance and I know that it's my turn to do kid duty if something comes up. I also don't mind him sitting there playing for a few hours at a time, because I know that he isn't necessarily 'addicted', he's just following through with something that he's agreed to help with, and sometimes those simple things can turn into HOURS just to finish up. I'm pretty much addicted to the battlegrounds right now. It's such a wonderful change being in Alterac Valley and actually winning! When I was in my 40's and doing Warsong and Arathi, wins were VERY rare for alliance. |

See, the thing is, the people I knew actually would skip out on dates and play WoW, and not for any particular reason to do so, just because they wanted to play.

That's their problem rather than the games. I have known men to blow off friends/dates/anything to watch a football game, not for any particular reason - just because they wanted to watch the game.
If you aren't mature enough to budget your time and be considerate of others around you (including people in game), then it doesn't matter whether it's WoW, Halo, TV, Chatrooms, Forums, Coding, Horse Riding etc etc - it's the individual behaving selfishly and with lack of restraint. |

It's like I suggested earlier. WoW, or anything else for that matter, doesn't have some kind of magical spell that holds people in its grip. If you can't moderate your life and play it at the same time, then it's likely you had a problem with moderation in your life to begin with.

All MMOs can be addictive. Some people can moderate themselves properly, others can't. It's not fair to blame the game for that.
I play - Level 70 Frost Mage on Turalyon EU. Currently dragging guild through Karazhan to get then well kited enough for BT and beyond |
