Logging into vb through a .NET site
Using vb 3.6.5.
We're using vb as a forum for a networking site. When users login to the site we'd also like them to be automatically logged into vb. The site is .net 2.0 / MSSQL and the forum opens up within a frame in one part of the site. We've tried cookies/inserting a record into the session table but we can't seem to get that to work. So far as we can tell there's no way of passing a query string to the login page to pass across the user data. Does anyone have any advice on how we can go about this? Thx |

Inserting a record in the session table and setting the right cookies should work. But, you need to take into account the sessionhash that vB generates based on the user's IP and browser's user agent (md5'ed).
Alternatively, you could do a server-side (or client-side clear gif) request to vBulletin's login.php, just like the login form does, passing the user's username and md5 password (you could send clear password as well, but this would be a security hole). Take a look at CES Cookie Cutter. It doesn't do what you need, but it shows the use of a clear-gif client side to transfer vB's cookies/login from one domain to a different domain. |

Before I post the question below as a new thread, I thought I'd check if your answer would apply to my situation as well? (If yes, what is this "CES Cookie Cutter")
I'm using an <iframe... /forum/ > to display the CMPS page (or it could just be the vBulletin home page) on my java/jsp application home page. I'm interested in being able to somehow login the user based on the <username> etc info that I may be able to pass through to vBulletin application so that I can show the forum content that the specific user is permitted to see. My users are coming from specific IP addresses since they mostly represent different companies. So I would like to show each user coming in the unique content specific to their company... but I cannot expect them to login to the forums as a secondary step from my java application? Is there a way to pass the username/password via the URL? Or to set a cookie on my parent domain etc that can be read by the <iframe...> included forum. The current setup is I have CompanyName.com/forum hosting the forum software on a website provider's servers. I have my java application running at CompanyName.net/tick/app/Login/Login.jsp Any suggestions for how I could do this? |
