Default Video and Youtube

All the video software out there is really bad. I've been searching for months. I want to have a site that is video based (with either uploading or embeding video) and have not been able to find anything at all decent. I'm considering trying to use vbulletin (which is solid software) as the backbone of my video site. Can anyone recommend a good addon that focuses on video?

This seems good, but I'm not familiar with what else is out there:

Also, is anyone planning on making an addon with the new youtube offsite upload api?

Coincidentally I posted an article on the YT API .

They should be rolling out the code system soon.

Yeah I'm interested how easy or difficult it will be to integrate with VB.

Also, does anyone know if it will be allowed for adult content sites?

Besides the YT news, does anyone have any recommendations for a good addon to integrate with VB?

Looks promising, thanks for sharing. I'd recommend getting the YT api integrated quickly. From experience with trying to install ffmpeg and other video encoding software it is a total pain. Many hosts do not provide support for applications like that. Also ingesting, processing and serving video content costs $100s a month so the ROI is difficult to recoup.

You can't install ffmpeg unless you are on dedicated or VPS hosting.
Some shared hosting services offer it too.
YouTube API is something we were looking at for those who can't host their own videos for whatever reason although we do have a manual conversion option as well.

As for ROI, that depends on how much marketing you do and the traffic you can attract to your site. Hosting your own videos will allow you to have full control over your content and keep it exclusive to your site.

There is an upfront cost for set up and so on, but recurring cost is not that great — under USD 100 per month (unless you're getting ripped off).

I presume content is still covered by the YouTube Community Guidelines, which prohibit explicit adult content.

Even with a dedicated server or VPS, installing ffmpeg may be impossible if your host does not allow root access. I love my host yet they do not allow root access (even on dedicated), so basically I am screwed.

For sites like mine that are just starting out, the cost to serve video is too high and I'm not willing to front the money for a dedicated server. I think the YT API will be perfect for people like me who need help kickstarting a video website. For established communities I think the tool you offer is great, although I could see established communities hit pretty hard by serving 5-10MB videos all day long. It's a whole different ball game.

I think it is great that you are extending vb to video, it is pretty much the wave of the future for many sites. I did alot of research on video sites before I settled on clip-share and there really isn't much out there right now. To save yourself some headaches, check out the clip-share.com site and forums. There are some things they do that are good and some things they do that aren't so good. From reading thier forums, you can get a pretty good sense of which is which.

Are you going to have category pages?

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Good Luck!

My VPS host is great too. They have great ffmpeg support. But as penagate mentioned we have a configuration feature so it can also run on shared hosting sites (we started out on shared host). You can start out on a low end VPS package for not too much more then the price a good shared package. No reason to go directly to dedicated servers.

The main point though is that you can host videos and be unique with exclusive content that you are totally in control of. If youtube doesnt like your video (for copyright or whatever reason) they will remove it. Then you have a bunch of threads with no videos

Also, another point is that its hard to attract traffic / new members if you are linking to the same video content that everyone else is linking to too. Why would I join a site to watch youtube videos when I could either stay where I am at (assuming I was a member at a site with youtube links already) or just go to youtube.com and watch them directly?

Thanks, its been a long hard road over the past 6+ months as our AdOn is 100% natively integrated with vBulletin and is secure as vBulletin itself. We still have many features planned for future versions but if we dont stop developing on the current version we will never get it released lol.
