I was wondering about how some-people's server configs handle their peak amount of active users.

One some shared servers I've run other vanilla type forums, that handle 25 to 200 active users no problem. Now I'm on a dedicated server (4 gigs ram, Dual AMD Opteron 246 2.0 GHz....) and I can handle about 1200 active users, posting/refreshing rather quickly, until things start to grind to a halt.

How do some of your hardware set ups compare to your active user breaking point?

What are some things that you change in peak times to help reduce server load (turn off similar threads, I remove active user list from index, add more ram, something else)?

There are many factors in this, adding a cache system like xcache, moving the search over to mysql or sphynx from the default vbulletin, i for one never use similar threads, but it can also depend on how many extra addons you have installed or any other custom programs that are integrating into the vbulletin system.

More RAM is always a good thing, but then again, if your not using swap now then RAM isnt a issue.

Drives also play a factor in this, the new SAS is prolly the best option at this point.

That's my next step, which would do the trick. I don't really have a ton of ad-ons, but I've tried to streamline it down to the essentials that make being a member a little more pleasant. I'd like to be able to handle about 2.000 at my current configuration, and not take the step up to the db server just yet.
