Search for Hide hack using the search bar at the top right of this site. (3.6 Mods) There are loads.

For your second question, this is already built in functionality in vBulletin.

You can enable it by going to your UserCP > Edit Options > Messages & Notifications > Check the "Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up" box.
