Can I allow registered users to choose an avatar that they have uploaded to some picture-host site, without letting them the option to upload avatars to my server? I don't want to give them the option to choose.

Is it possible?

I don't think so, because even with the option of entering the URL, it just take the image and still hosts it on your server.

So you say that each time a user changes his avatar, even if it's on the web, it's being uploaded to my server?

I think it overwrites so only one is stored for each user, but not 100% on that.
