Guys,

I'm not spamming this. I checked out my host today... Dreamhost.com today and look at my bandwidth!

Total Bandwidth Provided: 7472 GB

I use to be just at 5100 GB yesterday, but dreamhost has a sale now. All default packages are by default 5 TB of bandwidth. Also, my bandwidth increase at 40GB a week now. I just had to announce this. I was shocked when I saw this today. To be honest, I used them so far for 7 months and never been shut down, they don't limit mysql... they only have issues if your taking about 50% of the server Anyways, just check it out. Woot!

Eric

Gratz on having services you'll never be able to use without being shut off.

Dreamhost and other oversellers will tolerate a handful of power users - but if they hit a service pinch the sites with the most usage always get hit first. Keep that in mind.

yea, companies offer this sort of phenominal bandwidth so people buy into their traps... with their crappy server speeds and shitty customer service, plus many other crap things.

A current hosting plan i use are pricks, if my site spikes over about 250,000 page views a day they close the site down until the next day... and keep doing it if it goes above that... because im using the majority of server load in their shitty server clusters.

I know where you guys are coming from on this. I had several web service providers give me this issue, but I haven't with them. They only do it from what I've been reading is when you have something that really overloads the cpu or some stupid script generating mass errors. Other than that, no overselling on my end. Also, dreamhost offered something new like a Virtual Server, where you can add dedicated ram and processing features to your regular account. It starts at 15 and can be upgraded... so it's like you can upgrade to a vps in a way if your having these issues.

Regarding Speeds - Otoerance
------------------
Here test this file from my server. It's just a rpg song, but I just downloaded at 850kpbs per sec. I haven't had any issues with speeds

Thanks for your message. This is a common complaint from a small
vocal minority (there are probably less than 1% of our customers in this
situation). The problem is, they're under the assumption that download
bandwidth is directly correlated with CPU usage. We have plenty of
customers who use their entire bandwidth allotment with no issues. The
problem happens when you have a lot of resource intensive scripts (blogs,
galleries, wikis, etc) all running on your domain. Everytime the server
has to process a script or display dynamic content, it takes some of the
CPU time of the server. If you have resource intensive (or inefficient)
scripts in combination with a lot of site traffic, it's going to cause
server problems no matter how much is actually being downloaded. When it
comes down to it, we don't like to shut off a customers site. If it's one
site that is causing instability on the server that could crash hundreds
of other sites though, we have to take action to prevent that from
happening. At a certain point, there are just some sites that belong on
dedicated hosting and not a shared server. Hope this helps ease your
mind. If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Thanks!
Dan

I use dreamhost now for file hosting and I burn about 2TB a month on little web plan with no issues at all. I also have about 200GB of space, that I keep almost full constantly.

I have been doing this for about the past year and a half and have yet to have any problems.

I must say dreamhost, is definitely a first for me as a web host that allows me to use even half what I pay for, and in this case I use about 80% of my plan.

That's why they have this new Personal Server option. If your starting to run in that terriority, it's like they will dedicate ram and cpu usage to you for a small cost per month and acts just like vps. They even offer a the personal server option for mysql... so you can have your site run normal and have the mysql on their vps like option. It's weird they don't advertise it unless you have an account. On top of that, I have tons of things that hit their cpu, so you have to have an insane site, but that's why you can add ram and cpu usage to your current package. Another 9 bucks a month, they give you now 10TB of bandwidth.

Ok, here is the info from their page. Here is the link incase and the info below: http://www.dreamhostps.com/

What is this?
DreamHost PS is our new invite-only premium shared hosting service, available only as an add-on to a current DreamHost hosting plan. DreamHost PS uses Linux-VServer to give you your own "virtual machine", thereby protecting your CPU and RAM from all other users on your physical machine.

Everything else you've come to looooooove about DreamHost stays the same though: you get all the same features available from the same web panel, the same huge amounts of bandwidth and disk, the same load-balanced email, the same dedicated MySQL servers*, the same so-good support, and the same centralized high-performance storage with automatic versioned backups.

What's so great about it?
You get your own protected CPU and memory!
You can still burst up to the full 2.3 GHz cpu and double the memory!
It works just like your current shared service!
We'll never kill a persistent process / cronjob you run!
You can name your own "server"!
You get a unique IP (a $4.95/month value)!
You can change your memory and CPU on the fly... no reboot needed!
You can reboot your own server from our panel instantly!
You get historical memory / load graphs on our panel!
What's not so great about it?
It's currently invitation-only.
It's $1.50/month ($1.00/month forever if you pre-order now!) for each 10 MB and 10 MHz.
There's a $100 (waived for now!) one-time set up fee.
You don't get root access... remember, it works just like our regular hosting.
(But hey, no root means no breaking things... and our hosting is already super flexible!)
Here's a wiki page on troubleshooting your PS!
You cannot use Miva Merchant or Frontpage on DreamHost PS.
*New: DreamHost PS MySQL!
Now, you can get exactly the same sort of memory and cpu isolation you're used to from DreamHost PS for your MySQL databases as well!
DreamHost PS MySQL is completely separate from DreamHost PS; you can get either one without the other, neither or both!
** If you get both DreamHost PS for your web server and for your MySQL, you get 20% off your combined monthly DreamHost PS fees!
* For MySQL, CPU time is much less important than RAM and disk speed (MySQL PS uses local, raided, high-speed SAS drives). Since it is not a potential bottleneck, on MySQL PS CPU time is approximate... though still proportional to your RAM level.
DreamHost PS MySQL is version 5.0.24 (and higher in the future) only!
How much Memory / CPU do I need?
Honestly, since you can always adjust your amounts in real time, it's okay to just start randomly and then move it up (or down) if your site seems too slow (or too fast)!
Nonetheless, here's a very rough guideline:

150 MB / 150 Mhz: 99% of all predominantly static sites. (e.g. www.dreamhost.com)
300 MB / 300 Mhz: A top 100 blog. (e.g. blog.dreamhost.com)
515 MB / 515 Mhz: A busy forum. (e.g. discussion.dreamhost.com)
2300 MB / 2300 Mhz: A very popular web app. (e.g. panel.dreamhost.com)
We do recommend you start on the HIGH side though, and adjust down. Really ANY problem you may have with your DreamHost PS is ALWAYS due to not setting your levels high enough and running out of ram!
How can I sign up?
As great as this all sounds, DreamHost PS is invitation only for now! HA HA!

If you are currently a DreamHost customer and you want to get in on this sweeeeet new offering, you can pre-order via our panel today!

If you're not already a DreamHost customer, you'll need to remedy that first

Whomever wrote this up sounds like a teenager.

The new "Almost VPS" is just that. Its ALMOST a VPS. It is NOT a VPS, so why pay for it? It is just another way for them to suck you in and get more money out of you. My guess is they use cPanel. The "allottement" is not possible on a per account basis in cPanel. It is based on server specs, and how they have a specific server setup for CPU allotement. It is just a scam, you won't actually get what you pay for.

AFAIK, Dreamhost has always had their own custom control panel and server management tools. This may or may not make an impact on your theory but it's worth noting.
