The External Data Provider (external.php) is used for external access of threads. Instructions to implement this can be found here.

Well; yes, thanks very much but I already have that information. What isn't there is a "hello world" example and list of the data elements that are made available to the external caller.

Is it required of the vB licensee that they read through the sparsely commented php code to figure out what elements of or about a post may be available?

I haven't played around much with the External Data Provider, I simply query for them directly, it's much simpler and more flexible.

Could do that, but prefer to stay as close to the standard (nominally) supported vB model as possible.

This is, after all, the (again, nominally) official support for RSS feeds and that's an important part of keeping members interested and involved. It would be great to know exactly what it can do -- and why, for example, the JS component supplies less than the RSS.
