Custom Profile Fields..check. what's next?

Hello everyone. I hope this is the right thread for this.

Um, I posted in the inferno vbshout thread but nobody replied.

And i wasn't sure if i should ask them there either anyway. But, after learning the basics for creating a custom profile field, i was wondeirng if someone could direct me to the more advanced stuff. (guides mostly so i can learn)

I would basically like to allow my users to go into their user cp, and select whether they would like to show or hide the infernovbshout by default. i was able to make the radio button and everything. but of course, it's not going to magically work like that unless i enter in some extra info who knows where.

I once found a thread in which someone was able to do this but he let his users pick wehther they wanted to show or hide the "currently active users" box. my friend posted in that thread asking how it was done but he was only told to mess with the custom profile fields.

How do I make my forum, understand that the new custome field i make should do what i wanted it to do? is it as simple as adding a few lines into the template? (that would be great). cause i'm very familiar with html/css. but i'm guessing it ain't gonna be that easy either. >.<

so, if you guys don't mind, i'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. to either explain to me waht to do step by step, OR, just link me to the guide that most closely matches my needs so i can learn from it myself. either one is good.

in short, how can i make my custome profile fields do more advanced things like "show/hide" certain parts of the forum, or affect how the forum looks. kinda like "show hide avatar" or something like that. it could be anything. i just need to know what step 2 is AFTER i've already made the profile field. (which i have btw)
