why don't you assign a name to the new class or id for the menu?

for example, do this,

#menu ul {
	...
}

#menu li {
	...
}

#menu li a {
	...
}

and then assign the id to the menu,

<ul id="menu">
	<li>Link</li>
</ul>

this way, the browser knows which LI style it should read,
