Default Banning users from a public site.

Well, i have to say if your running a private site, banning works just fine.

But i run a public site, and there may be members I wish to ban for whatever reason...
the problem is that they can simply re-register again no matter what I do to ban them, or they can use a proxy and register again.

How do you ban someone permenantly from a publicly accessible site?

Everytime they register you simply keep banning them, eventually they will get tired of playing games

With repeat evaders, I usually threaten to or contact the ISP and that works wonders.

Trust me on this one... neither of the two above mentioned suggestions are going to work for the particular member i am thinking of.

not too much u can do other than maybe closing your registration for a week and see if he finally gives up.

if he's someone going incognito each time he comes back, u could also try the AE Detector mod.

I wonder how this would apply to foreign users, in eastern Europe for example. Would their ISP even care that a member is spamming your forum?

speaking of "miserable" the Miserable User mod is good one to try.

another that is built into vBulletin is called Tachy Goes to Coventry.

look under vBulletin Options / User Banning Options

In all honesty, there is nothing that you can do to stop someone registering on your site if they determined to do so short of disabling registrations all together.

Sooner or later the person will give up, but you need to have good staff who can keep banning as quick as the person is registering. The only problem is that depending on the determination of the person concerned, this can go on for weeks, if not longer.

Moderation of accounts is useful, but only really if the same IP address is used each time, but then an IP ban would solve than problem anyway. Moderation of posts by the registered users group is also useful, but it isn't really going to be suitable for active sites that get a number of new registrations every day.

(Oh and I know the exact member type you are referring too here)
