I'm curious about front/root-page designs that are geared toward registrations

I was gonig to redesign my front page of my site so noobs are drawn towards my discussion board. I think there's a good number of people that visit my site and have no idea what my site is all about, and that there's a 2 million post BB just one click away. Then getting them to register. I think I can accomplish all of this on one page, and still keep a lot of my SEO stuff I got going on.

Have any of you geared your main splash page to getting new members?
