I'm sure it's pretty simple and just requires an extra query, but I lack the knowledge about the new hook/plugin system to do it.

All I want to be able to do is display a logged in user's Avatar in the header template of my boards.

There is already a mod for that, do a search! can't remember the name of it but I got it working on my site http://www.pbxinfo.com/forums

I have not seen the hack for it, and I have search for a few days now. I have seen plugins that do something similar, but none of the m have been for the header template. Like I said, I don't know enough about plugin/hooks to modify the current hacks.

I believe what I'm asking for is very simple tho. If I have overlooked the hack already like you said (for vB 3.6) please tell me!

Sounds like the welcome panel hack and there are a few variations of it. Run a search for welcome panel hack.

Thanks for the reply. That is actually the hack I found earlier and tried to modify to my needs with no success.

That hack adds the avatar to the FORUMHOME template, I need the avatar to be added to the header template. I'm sure there's probably some little edit I have to make, I just don't know enough to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

It is a hack that may work for you... or may need some tweaking. If you need help just PM me.
