I was pointed to this thread and learned a few things--mainly I had never heard of the side by side comparison--very nice..
Ok so my question. I too have a bunch of modified templates and I have never updated my VBB. So just make sure I understand the template portion of the update(and the only part that confuses me). So I do the update--and the modified templates stay in the template history but are over writen as the current? So since it stays in history--I can easily do the side by side comparison so easily get the templates back to how I had them? Am I understanding this correctly? |

When you do an upgrade, if your templates were not touched (edited), then they will get upgraded by the vbulletin script. It you had touched them (they were listed in red - you had edited tehm at some point), the vbulletin upgrade script will not upgrade them and you will get a notice on the front of your admin cp saying "There are currently X templates out-of-date that need to be upgraded or reverted" (or something like that). If you open one of those out-of-date templates to edit, you may hit View History > Compare and see the differences between that out-of-date template and the default Jelsoft one.

So is the best method to revert them before the upgrade, then open history-compare and add the modded code to the new templates--since I assume no matter what the edited template is always saved in history? |

If you revert it vbulletin will overwrite it and won't give you the option to compare.

Once you hit Revert on a template, any history you have on it is deleted. So you don't want to revert it and then upgrade unless you want to lose all your template edits.
