Hi guys,

My site is totally dead so I need to move to a new host and try and repair what I can. I have a backup from about 2 weeks ago, which I will be wanting to restore along with some additional info from the semi-deleted database on the current server.

I have got a new host lined up, but it is a windows server instead of the linux one that I am used to (not that I ever did anything technical with it though). However, my domain is registered through my host and I cannot control the name servers while it is with them.

So, what I need to know is
  1. Who is a good place to transfer my domain name to so that I can change the nameservers to the new host?
  2. What is the best way to import the database (151MB)?
  3. Anything else that I might need to know about windows servers.
I'm wanting to get the wheels in motion sooner rather than later then I can get the domain transfer started so that I can have as little downtime as possible.

I've not had to do a server move or anything before so I'm a complete n00b to this.

Good news, I got it all back up and running again, minus some of the hacks, and the style. Apart from that, the only thing I actually lost was about 2 weeks worth of posts (ie the ones since my backup). I didn't lose any members though as my user table was still mainly intact although rather messed up with my old host.

Just waiting for them to release my domain name then I can get the name servers changed, but for the meantime a redirect and a temp URL are doing the job.

I use powervps.com for my server, 1and1.com for the domain host.

Kerry-Anne, what are you looking to spend per month? You don't really want to run on Windows, do you?

I'm paying £40 for the year so really doubt I can get it cheaper than that. Plus it works fine for the size of my site. If I have massive growth then I'll look into something else, but as it stands, this is just fine.

My Domain has finally caught up with me after many hours spent yelling at the old host to get them to release it to 123-REG.

It's been a tough couple of weeks, but finally it is all nicely resolved :banana: :banana:
