Hi guys,

My site is totally dead so I need to move to a new host and try and repair what I can. I have a backup from about 2 weeks ago, which I will be wanting to restore along with some additional info from the semi-deleted database on the current server.

I have got a new host lined up, but it is a windows server instead of the linux one that I am used to (not that I ever did anything technical with it though). However, my domain is registered through my host and I cannot control the name servers while it is with them.

So, what I need to know is
  1. Who is a good place to transfer my domain name to so that I can change the nameservers to the new host?
  2. What is the best way to import the database (151MB)?
  3. Anything else that I might need to know about windows servers.
I'm wanting to get the wheels in motion sooner rather than later then I can get the domain transfer started so that I can have as little downtime as possible.

I've not had to do a server move or anything before so I'm a complete n00b to this.

Thanks for the link. I'll look into them.

They seem to be like GoDaddy in the sense that they branch off to different companies for hosting solutions such as: http://www.peoplehost.com/

Err...No phone support/contact options?

Use https://www.namecheap.com for your domain. Godaddy is kind of lame. And the best way to reinstall the database is SSH.

Haha, I have never had a need for that. Email questions seem to be answered immediatly. I am sure they have a number.

Personally I like domainsite.com, I have purchased several domains with them, and there support is quite good as they do reply to you in time. :bunny:

If you need a dead site turned into a live site, please contact me.

It is looking increasingly like a total write off. The database backup is having problems restoring, and it's generally not going well.

Any reason you went with a windows host oppsed to a linux host.

Your problem maybe that windows host as MSSQL rather then MySQL and i beleive that would present problems importing one to the other

It has got mySQL 4 and mySQL 5 so thats ok. I'me restoring again via a different method and so far it seems to be going ok (apart from attachments)

I might go for the impex to a fresh install method though, as I have no idea what mods I had installed, especially as some of them I did myself so haven't got install clicks to guide me with them.
