Yes, I absolutely DESPISE one and one. Never Never will I deal with them. (And I mean never).

Anyone but 1 & 1.

I go with Hostgator as its US dollar based (Its therefore very cheap) and no Vat (As I'm UK based). Their backend scripts are always up to date.

If you plan on staying with 1and1 I'd recommend upgrading to a VPS or dedicated account. If you do switch to another host, keep 1and1 for the domain package (even if you don't use their hosting packages), as 1and1 has the lowest price on domains I've ever found.

You're wrong on the domain costs. GoDaddy.com and Enom.com (I believe as well) in the US, smoke 1 & 1 on domain prices.

Although those ****** at 1 & 1 have allowed US based domain buyers to purchase at rates far lower than they sell in Europe and YOU MUST have a US address to buy them at that lower price.

Everything about 1 & 1 to me is unethical (I've had packages with them and all sorts) NEVER NEVER NEVER again.

Veneti, explain to me please how anything domain other than .info on godaddy is cheaper than 1and1. $9.99 for com or net, $8.99 for org on godaddy, compared to $6.12 (sale, reg $6.99) for everything but biz or ws on 1and1. The only way godaddy's domain prices are better is if you get hosting from them, and their pricing on shared hosting is absolutely hideous. Enom doesn't even seem to list their prices (every comparison I've seen shows Enom as charging an astounding $30 per year for .com).

Try to transfer your domains away from 1&1 and you'll wish you payed the extra $2

Here is some advice for ya.
1&1 is a bad hosting server.
My friend TechDawg who owns Iridethelines.com uses it and, for some time he had to turn off avatars, change the pm limit to 25 from 100, all becuase 1&1 dosn't give out enough mySql.
So if you ever get a big site i would suggest to change hosts. He has over 50,000 users and has been open for one year.

I began with 1and1 until recently when their server was rooted and cost myself and other shared customers on the same server, time, money and data loss.
They could not even provide me with a server backup so I lost 2 years of data.
Now, I keep my domain registration with 1and1 since they are cheap
($6.99 with free private registration and 2GB mail account)
but I host at GoDaddy by setting off site DNS.
You will run into problems with database size in the long run as said previously
but if you still insist on hosting with 1and1,
the control panel is quite self explanitory.
  • Create a database through MySQL Administration
  • Create a folder for your site and upload VB via FTP
    • If you plan to have a front end CMS, I suggest putting VB in folder named forums
  • Set your domain to point to that folder in Domain Management.
