At the moment we are running eaccelerator, but keep on hearing good things of xcache.

Which is the best and why?

Hopefully looking to improve server response and reduce page load times.

eAccelerator + Memcache datastore has been our choice for quite some time now. We haven't used xCache much although it does seem to run well.

Have to say I did. Installed it last night. Had some minor issues so far but due to xcache's incompatibility with php 5.0.x my hand was forced into picking ea as upgrading 5.0.x was a bit too much for me considering everything was working ok aside from that.

No one has mentioned apc.

So I will

Works with php 5.x as well, and benchmarks close to xcache, and supports datastore and will probably be bundled by default with php real soon now.

Those instructions seem to be a bit long but it looks to be accurate...you should probably swap out the version #'s and get the most current versions.

If you click any of the first 3 links in my sig, you'll see how quick memcache is with eAccelerator.
