*Works On Outcoding Chen, Though It May Not Ever Happen*
vBulletin is nice, if you have the money. Don't get me wrong. I purchased my license a couple of years ago and just loved it, though I'm needing more experience for coding so I freelance for OpenBB. Plus it's fun and I know everyone. |

While OpenBB is nice, it does not have a permissions system like vBulletin that will allow you to control what users can and cannot use/see, which forces it under vBulletin.
I cannot say that OpenBB is a bad board, only that is currently offers no competition with vBulletin; although to be a free board, it does offer competition between its competitors (IPB, phpBB, ect). The design of OpenBB is very nice and clean and is easy to change (via templaets), like that of vBulletin; this alone makes it comparable, but not competition. I give credit to the idea and effort placed into the board and coding, as well as credit to the developers (past and present), although it has a long way to come before it actually provides competition to vBulletin. We will wait on OpenBB 2.0 to see what happens between the two, but with vBulletin 3.0 coming out soon enough, you will need to offer a great deal of features to match. |

I have installed openbb and it was nice but dident suit my needs. On anthor not you can not compare a free board to one you pay for, both are aimed at differnt sites/webmasters. IMO vBulletin scales better then any other product ive seen, mySQL dose have is limitations however. |

Agreed with you AL, although ALOT of people don't think that way. They see paying as more of a disadvantage then a better service.

Many say that free boards cannot compare with those that are not open source or free based; in saying that, I honestly believe that is false.
I fully believe that some (free) boards could be developed to offer such competition, if developed correctly. OpenBB has been said to offer competition with vBulletin, while currently it does not, it could if the correct features were implemented. I honestly was going to use OpenBB for HiveMailSkins until I did not see a permissions system. OpenBB was just as easy to skin, just lacked the single feature that was needed. |

How about IPB? They say this is the next competitor for vB.

Sorry to say, but with that tempate system, they are not going anywhere right now. While it may be good for those getting away from iKonboard, OpenBB and phpBB easily overpower IPB greatly.

I agree, IPB is hell when it comes to editing the templates.

Thank you! Finally somebody agrees with that. You can never convince those IPB lovers how crap the template system is. Garrr!

From the way they have the layout, to the order the templates are in, down to the HTML spacing in the templates......it's all a mess....
