Don't bother with new hacks; instead make your forums a nice community in general and people will come by word-of-mouth and stay because they like the interaction.

You can try a shoutbox and other popular hacks but they tend to increase useless posts. Also install a search-spider hack (one's in my profile, several have been released) so your threads get indexed.

Edit: noticed something else important: add a <title> tag; otherwise your search engine ranking will go through the floor.
