Yes, if you can include vb's global.php in your script, then the best thing to do is to use the User data manager. It just involves creating the object, setting the fields, and calling save. Probably the best thing to do is to look at register.php or admincp/user.php (the $_POST['do'] == 'update' section) and see what they do.
