Basketman, the truth is your forum wouldn't be half as successful if everyone knew that "secret code", right? There are millions of vBulletin websites. Some owned by businesses, individuals, teenagers, the list keeps going. Some are also more hobby-based or private, while others were strictly made for monetizing.
How many threads have you seen on vb.org alone asking people how to gain registrations or further monetize their vBulletin? vBulletin (and any website or software for that matter) isn't a one-step solution to success. With good trial and error, a strong knowledge on your software and its capabilities, a proper business plan, and a good marketing concept - that's what will rise you above the competition. Assuming you have it covered financially of course
