I found out today off my computing tutor that you have to do a 3year course in Computer Science followed by an extended three years doing the course in which some time you have to make some kind of publication. So look out for "vBulletin Modifications for Dummies". Coming to a bookstore near you within 6 years time ..
I think it has to be a research topic book, not instructions or tutorials. Say you want to get a doctorate in Cows Milk, you would write up a 600 page book on the benefits of cows milk, and the healthyness of it etc etc.
My uncle and aunt (both are a couple lol) both got phd in a medicine field. My aunt did it in cows milk as I said above lol, and wrote a friggen 400 page book, with 9pt font or something on it. My uncle, did it on a brain stimulant, or something, thats in the brain, and wrote a 1000 page book, which is 10x15 in size, with size 9pt font lol.
Now they have awesome jobs at Oxford University for some research, so I guess years of education pays off.
Also regarding the calling yourself doctor. If you do it in a medical field, then you will be recognized as Dr. <name here> forinstance. I am sure you can go around calling yourself doctor, but people will not address you with Dr. <name here>.
