So this post from Lynne (Of the vB3 series, only 3.8.8 will work with PHP5.4. None of the 3.x series has been verified as working with PHP5.5. )

I don't know if vb3 will work with php 5.3, I'd go with 5.4.
It was from March of 2014, so I'm sure any newer version of the 3.x series would work as well. I think there is a 3.8.9
