In my opinion: The default vbulletin operation here is correct.

Most of us wish we could have all sent messages saved, but most boards with private messaging enabled could collect tons of clutter in the database if all sent messages were stored automatically. At some point the PM messages might have to be purged and using a date option to purge them is not the best method for users. On the large board I oversee, this option would be impossible, as I have over 4-5 thousand PM's a day.

I hope this helped a bit, but I get your wish.
