why do signature pictures automatically link to the picture directly?

My users are complaining that they can't make their signature images link to urls properly. The forum is putting in an automatic link to the image and stripping out any other url bbcodes.

It's probably just a setting in the AdminCP to change this behavior but I can't find one. Can anyone enlighten me?
