Hiding thread titles in the index.php

Without modification, is there anyway to stop sub forum posts from appearing in the "New Posts" column of index.php?

Maybe this needs some further explanation:

Among the various forums I currently have, one of them has a sub forum, for example:

• Forum Header One
  • Forum A
  • Forum B
• Forum Header Two
  • Forum C
    • Forum D (sub forum here)
  • Forum E

When a user views the index page, they obviously see all the forum headers and all the root forums (i.e. Forum A, B, C, E but not D as this is a sub forum)

Now if a post is made to Forum D, an this is the latest post in Forum C or D, on the index page a post summary (i.e. title, poster, time) shows under the last post column. This is what I want to hide (to be replaced with the last post in Forum C)
