I decided to dump all the nukes and buy myself a true CMS. I cannot tell you how happy I am.

Ok did you guys get it to work with nuke 5.5 or 6.0 and vb2.3.0 ?
If so how did you do it and how much editing was done to the original hack on this thread ? |

I dumped nuke altogether which is a pain and now a total dead end thanks to FB closing the project. I knew that would happen eventually because he closed the open source dev from the beginning and now it looks like nuke is on its way out.
I have been using NePHP and the time it saves is well worth the money (given the hours, days, weeks of bloody nuke frustration and limitations, moduling, etc.). It fully integrates vbulletin which is fantastic and also allows you to put in custom PHP code as well, all different kinds of ranking for articles, autoarchiving and other cool stuff. I sold a domain and have an extra licenses that I'm selling for $295 ($500 regularly) and includes a free upgrade to version 5. Right now it is far better than the limited competition. |

For those of you stuck with your PHP-Nuke sites there will be a great vBulletin PostNuke integration soon.
Stay tuned. |

I used to work with PostNuke and with several others (you can see my credits) and can only say that the "dream integration" that all of these Nuke sites promise is not nearly what it is cracked up to be. Most want the "I don't want to mess with it superpackage" but they just aren't there, especially after fiddling with what you have for a few months. Best is to make the investment in what you want to accomplish.
Having a real publishing package and the ability to place vBulletin posts on other pages is all you need. So if you want a very clean (not nuke like jumbles and blocks) interface which is much more flexible, if you have a good CMS, you can easily put VB components where you like them such as the latest posts that were made and the ability to see the latest comments too. My site is super clean and many wonder how it's so well integrated and easy to use. It is just a product of having really good essential components where they are and only "integrating" areas where needed. Total cost of all the components is under $400 and you can keep it $190 for the most part. If you add up all the frustrating hours of fiddling and dealing with failings of nuke, you will easily realize that you wasted away chunks of your life and time when you could be earning much more money than what you spent. |

What I'm saying is that for an online portal, e-zine or whatever application, the Nuke family of product is far inferior from a performance, presentation and administration standpoint than other products. You may say "well I'm happy with what I have" until one day you realize that you've pulled the wool over your eyes because you thought that simplicity was best. When you look around and take just a little effort (I'm not even a developer), you can create sites that will look better, last longer, and be easier to handle than any of the Nukes, including Postnuke.
I'm not sure what "integration" means. With a true CMS, e.g. miraserver and others, you can administrate news pages easily, they can look wysiwyg, advanced multiple pagination, and also have all your articles published right into vBulletin 3 if you want. Care to create a thread for articles? That's already done for you. Want to have user posts appear on the front page? No problem. Even better, you can have a vBulletin thread dedicated to every "news article" or "story" that you publish rather than that string of nonsense called 'comments' that is held in Nuke. But I'm simplifying things. Yes, postnuke, php-nuke (still more support), and more nukes can be used but after seeing the light, I'd never go back. Conclusion: For those of you starting out wanting to create your own portal, go to sitepoint, devarticles, or whatever popular web creation community and ask people what they are using. It will carry you much further than a nuke-based solution that continues to have enhancements layered on top of mediocrity... IMHO of course. |
