The only "hacking" that is required is uploading a theme and setting the options for that theme.
In the end you should try them all and find the one that works for your needs. I personally prefer Wordpress at this time because it is very easy to work with and I have never had to hack the code. Install a few plugins here and there but never had to hack code. Drupal on the other hand was a coding nightmare from the beginning. Couldn't do much of anything without hacking the code or installing a couple dozen modules. Joomla provided little flexibility in the configuration of categories or taxonomy so was pretty wasteful in the long run. I'll admit that I haven't tried Expression Engine but it really doesn't interest me for my needs.
