Sometimes it is already discussed in the mod thread whether the mod is compatible with other versions. It seems I'm always seeing someone say "will this work with version 3.x.x?" So, try reading the whole thread (recommended highly in any case) and see if it is already discussed.

Many times the mod will work, but it really depends. I've had the simplest of mods not work after an upgrade simply because vbulletin made a little change in how something was done.
