Importance of Memberlist

Sometimes I wonder just how important it is to have a link to the memberlist at the top. I am considering either moving it to the footer or removing it altogether. Has anyone else done this?

It would be great to have a couple of notification PM templates available to choose from and then when you move a thread and you can pick one and it auto-PMs the user.
