I would say yes it's best to avoid altering any stock tables however it is possible. Why not just have your addon or product use a seperate table? this way you can easily upgrade it without the loss...

I just did this few days ago. I went from 3.0.2 => 3.6.8 without any issues. However, I clicked "Next Step x of x" maybe 300 times to get 3.0.2 to 3.6.8 :)
