Q: 4 x Dual Xeon Single Core 3.0 1 Gb RAM OR 2 x Dual Opteron Dual Core 2 Gb RAM?

If the price is equivalent, given the choice between:

4 x Dual Xeon Single Core 3.0 1 Gb RAM servers

OR

2 x Dual Opteron Dual Core 2.0 2 Gb RAM servers

to be used as webservers, which option would you choose?

4 x Dual Xeon Single Core 3.0 1 Gb RAM servers. Too much RAM is useless if the processor is not strong enough ;)

Erwin 04-11-2006 11:27 PM

But Dual/Dual Opterons are more powerful than Dual/Single Xeons. :)

Corriewf 04-11-2006 11:38 PM

Ram is too important, go with the 2 gigs. :)

MrLister 04-11-2006 11:45 PM

If you need that much proccessing power chances are you will need at least 1GB ram. Go with the 2nd option.

Not only are opterons better but you get more ram

Mmm... that's what I thought - 2 D/D Opterons are better than 4 D/S Xeons.

Then you need to catchup on your reading.

I'd have to consider what you are doing with all of the servers, however at the end of the day the Opterons, even a single dual core would probally stomp all over a dual single core xeon setup.

I'm guessing you are going for web/db servers Erwin? Might want to look at smaller frontend boxes and mroe of them, with a beefier database system and possibly a memcached server for storing the database in. Altho I've only heard about such a system I'm sure it would be killer as far as fast.

I'd go with 2 x Dual Opteron Dual Core 2.0 2 Gb RAM. 1 Gb is just too little, regardless of CPU power.

Opteron configuration all the way! :)
