Am I cursed?

So I'm driving into town to go to the shop to have a look about, maybe get some drinks or sweets or whatever...

Come to a speed camera in a 30 zone, doing about 27 so I slow down a bit more to make sure - Get to about 25 going past and I think everything's fine - Lo and behold this idiot who has been riding the rear-end of my car for the last 100 yards shoots off to the right and overtakes me...

Now fair enough, open road, no traffic or obstacles etc, yes, he's a w****er but there is a red traffic light about 100 yards in front of me, with a car already waiting there...

The pillock pulls back in, clips the side and front of my car...

Rips my bumper and front part of my car clean off, shatters the side panel and scratches the door, breaks the mounting for my right hand set of lights and then, after all that, continues on as soon as the lights go green!!!! :surprised:

So he comes back 10 minutes later after a fire and rescue vehicle who witnessed it gave chase, and now I'm left with a £470 excess for my car, for an accident that WAS NOT MY FAULT and I cannot pay it

I have about £50 to last me until August - How am I going to pay £470 excess? :disappointed:

I'm a bit confused, did you catch him or not ?

Chris M 07-05-2005 09:31 PM

How do you mean "catch"?

Catch as in he drove off and was caught and told to come back? If so, no, that was the fire and rescue guy...

Catch as in did I clip him? No - He pulled in on me...

Best off paying for it instead of telling your insurance company or your no-claims bonus will go bye bye :(

Paul M 07-05-2005 09:39 PM

Did the guy not get his registration number then ? Have you reported it ? You may get lucky and a cctv camera somewhere got his number.

He did come back and give info to the police but drove off before I could get anything off him -.-

Luckily I have 2 witnesses and I have his registration number...

@Dean - Too late - Already rang them up and explained everything...

Good news is I have 2 days to find the money - Bad news is I will go to prison in 4 days for robbing a shop of ?470 :p

Is auto insurance done differently in the UK ??? Over here if it's the other person's fault you almost always come out on top - Either their insurance pays for the damages or if they don't have insurance you can sue them for the damages. Same thing happened to me a little over a year ago and their insurance paid for everything and even gave me a rental car while mine was in the shop.

While I don't know both sides of the story, I will ask if it was a double-yellow line (in the US, that indicates no passing).

AN-net 07-06-2005 03:07 AM

shouldn't he pay you for the damages? im a little confused here satan...

Marco van Herwaarden 07-06-2005 06:25 AM

Payment by insurance companies can take a long time. I guess the car needs to be fixed now. :(

Suck up to your parents. That's all I can say. :p

I will come out on top eventually - But it's the case of if he contends my claiming off his insurance that the problems arise, and court cases are involved -.- It was his fault, even the bloody copper who took my statement said he is at fault - There is no way that you can cause that damage to my car other than the way I described the accident, unless I'd hit a few bollards and/or trees and made it look like he hit me :p

But I have two witnesses, one being a Manager in the local Fire Station...

Sadly I am too young to hire a car or have one hired for me, and my insurance company policy doesn't provide a courtesy car :(

Sadly no, it was a single dotted white line, which allows you to overtake if safe to do so - The police officer muttered a few words about that guy under his breath and how it was not safe to overtake, but unless it goes to court theres little they can do...

In an idealistic world, sure :(

Exactly - This will most likely be still being contested (assuming the guy doesn't accept responsibility) around Christmas time - I need the car fixed today, and it will likely take up to a week to fix it, as there is more than just cosmetic damage...

Upon removing some of the panelling which was fractured, myself and my dad have noticed several metal support brackets for the wheel arches, light fittings, bonnet and engine fittings that are sheared and bent and battered - The force he hit me with was more than just a slight nudge... He essentially rammed me in the side...

Make sure that an insurance expert have looked at the damage before you do (or even remove to have a look) anything.

Otherwise you might end up in a fight with the insurance company if all damage was really caused by the accident.

Chris M 07-06-2005 11:52 AM

We've already explained the damage and the car was picked up this afternoon - The expert will confirm the damage and get the car repaired...

The panel itself will have to come off anyway as it is shattered, so damaging the edge which was already damaged a little more to take a look in won't make any difference...
