Its much better to code from scratch, none of the wysiwyg editors make complients standards html most of the time. |
I'm not wanting anything fancy. Its for a school project; no one here knows how to make a web site. I throw up a page with a background and text andf I'm god. I just don't feel like hardcoding it. It doesn't need to be standard complient or anything.

So there is pretty much no free alternative WYSIWYG editor like Frontpage that you guys know of?

If it is just for school you can download the trial of dreamweaver. Wouldn't that be 'cheating' though? :)

Give the guy a break, go with the dreamweaver trial :)

go with DW. Its easier to give yourself an appendectomy with a dull spoon than do anything useful with MS FP.
|
Thanks. I'll downlaod the trial. No it isn't cheating. :p. We have to do a report and present it to the class in some form. We chose web site and I'm to lazy to code it all in notepad. :). THanks a to guys.

yep, MX does produce valid XHTML |
BBEdit or Taco HTML Edit
they work wonders, i not a fan of DW |
DW for XHTML, Zend Studio for PHP, Eclipse/JBuidler for Java
long time I haven't seen notepad, I replaced it with EmEditor :| |

Free - wysiwyg - drag and drop etc. |

For those of you who think you're gods because you code in Notepad, you're aiming a shotgun at your foot instead. You lose color coding, intellisense popups, real-time syntax validation, line numbering, even auto indenting. If you also think that people who use WYSIWYG editors don't know how to code, think again there, too. I spend something like 90% of the time in Dreamweaver in the code view because I prefer to design the layout in my mind, not in the program (which can't really do CSS layouts yet IMO). |

I don't need syntax highlighting for anything. |
on Win OS, I use Editplus for almost all the codings. It got syntax highlight, tab browsing, and almost all features that a coder needs for programming.
|
on windows i use notepad/wordpad/crimson editor
it all depends what i'm doing. |
I also use ConTEXT, one nice programming tool.
|
Thank you all. I've settled on DW for just this project but I'll check soem of the others soon.

Since when was FrontPage free? Anyways, hand code, that way you'll get it to validate and adhere to standards without your editor slapping in loads of deprecated values ;)
|
I used to use front page, dream weaver, etc in my rookie days :) Over the past couple of years, I've just been using Notepad, may take a little longer to code, but the results are nicer :)
|
I still use DW, but not the default install. DW isn't free, but it's very flexible, I love how it allows you to edit default templates, change rules and such. If you know how (Or follow a good tutorial), editing DW is a very wise option.
I hand code most the time though, quite pointless me buying it really, but saves me time (Approx. 2 mins) when setting up new documents, time is money! |

it's the developer who creates -- not the tools ...
with the right tool you can build anything ... knowing how to use the tool and taking advantage of what it has to offer can and will decrease development time time is money |

Then i am glad i don't know what i am doing, goes much faster. ;) |

I only ever touched the WYSIWYG when I wanted to expand the width of all <td> tags at once (I have since then learned that by using <thead> and <tbody>, I only need to set the width of the first <td> tag that does not use colspan attribute, and the rest will follow.) Also, Im sure noone codes PHP in DW's WYSIWYG. Yet it is an useful tool for syntax highlighting. (The first person to mention code rewriting in relation to vB is a goddamn n00b btw) Also, DW seems to have problems with its highlighting when it comes to <<< tags (or whatnot). |
