What the d00d said ^^

sabret00the 10-24-2003 12:27 PM

my members are posting but i can't say all interest me, i'm actually considering buying a few smaller boards and merging their traffic with mine :dunno:

noppid 10-24-2003 02:43 PM

Steer your forum and build your content by posting a few on topic posts a day. Give them something to reply to. It's alot of work sometimes.

Post welcome messages, maybe they will reply and give you a hint as to why they are there and then start a topic about that.

Post on topic news links and ask for opinions or relative experience responses.

These things seem to help us.

sabret00the 10-24-2003 02:51 PM

he's right, i made something like 30 threads in the past 2 days, just to liven up two sections

That theme is very nice!

insanctus 10-24-2003 04:44 PM

Me I hacked mine so if they do not post they do not see anything.

I am in process of making them have to post so many times a week if not they will not see.

To make up for the morons that will just post some dumb thing I have mods who will ban them.

I feel if they have no interest they do not need to be on my site.

Your point ?

sabret00the 10-24-2003 06:31 PM

lol @ noppid

anyway i think it's a gutsy approach you've taken there insanctus, good luck.

insanctus 10-24-2003 06:47 PM

Personally I found noppid reply to be moronic for he knows nothing of me but that is not an issue to me. Perhaps he is having issues and that link is more for him (since he believes he can judge others)

As for my approach when I first started my “personal” site my goal was to hit 50 members. Now being way above that and honestly care less about new members anymore.

The way I view it is most of us pay good money for our hosting/licence/addons and so forth why have people on it that do not really care?

Making them post an intro to read the rest of the site gives you an idea of who they are and if they even fit into the structure of the site.

As for my idea of ban the morons who just post to read, where is the loss? I personally think any with a “serious” site would only want those whom are serious on the issues.

sabret00the 10-24-2003 06:49 PM

yep that's a fair enough attitude, well the intro rest of the site bit but

seems a little excessive but as you said you really don't give a, so it's upto you.

insanctus 10-24-2003 06:54 PM

Nope I don't I figure if I lose 10 non posters and gain 2 who post I won in the deal.

If a board cares about numbers then this is not the way to go for them.

Also I am alot dif then most admins. For instance I banned someone 2 days ago for being a moron. The members "active" ones voted him back into site. Hence he has a second chance.

I do things alot dif but it seems to be working for the most part:)

sabret00the 10-24-2003 07:11 PM

yeah, i'm like that on my board, i give folk a chance.

I will give all that a try ..

MaxScript 10-24-2003 09:14 PM

i wish i can hack up my board , but there no ( very little ) vb3 hacks

insanctus 10-24-2003 09:16 PM

I hack my vb3 if you are reffering to my hack that makes them post to see it is one line and I would be happy to share it.

Just pm me if ya want.

insanctus 10-25-2003 12:15 AM

Glad you find it usefull :)

I like it for the reasons above plus google sees keywords I put in :)

It is a handy so far that I have seen. Even if it ticks off some it will make others post and be active.

MaxScript 10-25-2003 12:17 AM

putting it to the test now, will see what happens

If your members aren't posting, there isn't anything good to reply to. You need to make sure there are threads where everyone can reply and be included. Make it look like a new member can fit into most of the discussion threads. :)

I wish, my site due to its nature tends to at times be sort of a research at times for some.

I have had high school kids and college kids wanting to do research on people on my site for school projects or reports.

It all depends on your forum type on what is best approach to the solution. Myself I have found this to be the best, with about 2 to 5 joining a day as of late and 90% of them posting an intro hence 20 people welcoming them to site and they feel they are welcome (unless prove otherwise).

It is almost impossible to make someone new feel they are welcome to a site until they make themselves known.

I know personally I would not sign up to any site if it was not required.

MaxScript 10-25-2003 05:04 PM

reason them not posting is that my old database server crashed ... 3 week downtime < very bad

but now i hfixed all the server problems and all ready to go. I did a mass email and some members are coming back to post again but some are not .... I do get alot of guest which in turn hope they become members

MaxScript 10-25-2003 05:04 PM

email approve ?

is it good or bad ?
