suspended account due to 1.7 gig database Need help@

I just got a email from my host today telling me my account was suspended diue to a large 1.7 gig database. I need some ideas peraps hacks I can install that will help drop this number down! Please!!!

I am looking for the attachments as files hack now.

Thanks!!

filburt1 04-09-2003 06:00 PM

Turn off avatars, attachments, limit post sizes, prune old posts, remove hacks that add bulk to the database, turn off searching. Should make database size plummet.

ryancooper 04-09-2003 06:10 PM

thanks filburt1 I will try that. I know people will not like to loos the avatar so I think I have to leave that alone. I jsut noticed i had over 400,000 posts in a usenet group. Hopefully pruning that will help!

1.7 gig database..?
A lot of hosts would have suspended your account ages ago..

ryancooper 04-09-2003 06:35 PM

LOL I don;t think they noticed!! I just got the email today.

tpearl5 04-09-2003 07:48 PM

First, prune old messages, then reindex the search index if you don't want to turn it off completely. The search index is usually a big chunk of the database.

Make sure you regularly optimize the attachments table, through phpmyadmin, as I once found when my attachment table was reading 50+ megs, that once I optimized it, it had gone down to under 5mb.

Use repair.php ;)

ryancooper 04-09-2003 09:53 PM

OK Well i used the rep[air.php and got now have this error on my pages/. . .

Database error in vBulletin 2.2.6:

run it again, shopuld fix that

ryancooper 04-09-2003 10:15 PM

OK i will try. Thanks! I am dying here!!! I almost uploaded my backup from 3 months ago. Glad i read this first!! Thanks

FYI when I run it i do get a lot oferrors saying tanble is corrupt. . .

ryancooper 04-09-2003 11:29 PM

Great . . .

I just suspended your account because you said you were
going to prune your database. You went ahead and ran a
repair on the database and the file size of the database
has also gone up instead of down. The database is now
1.8GB. The repair commands you were running brought the
server down twice which caused a lot of downtime for over
200 customers.

filburt1 04-09-2003 11:36 PM

Repair optimizes the database, too. If anything, after the query was done it should have greatly (well not greatly) reduced your db size.

ryancooper 04-09-2003 11:39 PM

Well either way I am now jsut trying to get them to un-suspend me so I can "hopefully" salvage the remander of the site. Looks Like i have a looooong night ahead of me! LOL

filburt1 04-09-2003 11:42 PM

If that's shared hosting then you'll need to find a dedicated server quickly. No sane host will let you use that much space.

Zach 04-09-2003 11:57 PM

I would start with your searchindex

screw everything else

493.8 MB is my search index of a 1.1 gig database. If you got to do something start there.

400,000 USENET posts? Get rid of them, since most members don't look at them much.

ryancooper 04-10-2003 12:36 AM

too late they want 200 bucks to repair the database. Looks like i am starting from scratch. . .

If they have a dedicated server plan ask them if you buy it from them if they will transfer the database to it.

ryancooper 04-10-2003 12:42 AM

dedicated server runs over 100 bucks a month. I can'f afford that:(

Yes, but my logic is, if you can have them move it for 100, you can get the database backed up, and find a cheaper host. see my logic?

Erwin 04-10-2003 12:45 AM

200 bucks to repair the database? That's steep. Are you sure they can charge you for that?

ryancooper 04-10-2003 12:48 AM

Do i really have a choice? It's either that, buy a dedicated server or delete it. . . I am trying to get into the account so I can at least grab the emails of my forum memebrs. I have a sql backup from 3 months ago, better than nothing i guess. . .

ryancooper 04-10-2003 01:04 AM

I will. Thanks you all for your help!

Webdork 04-10-2003 04:52 AM

Delete the search index, delete the newsgroup forums, then run optimise one table at a time. This should stop their server from dying (assuming they let you restart it). Prune all posts with no replies for 90 days. Re-run optimise and you should have a much smaller db. For this size db I would be using phpmysqladmin - definitely not repair.php

RDX1 04-10-2003 07:17 AM

If you have such a long forum, why don't you have ads on your site to pay for it?

Sebastian 04-10-2003 10:55 AM

that means its time to get a dedicated server.. MOST host out there give you xyz diskspace and that space is included with mysql.. i guess there are some cheap hosts out there that will suspend customers accounts even though they are under their alloted diskspace..

i'd move to a dedicated server if i were you, its only a matter of time when it gets back up to 1.7.gb.

ryancooper 04-10-2003 11:20 AM

Well it looks like I am ++++ out of luck. I have to start over from scratch. QUESTION:

If i run my backup via PHPMYADMIN in the SQL forum everything should come back correct??

filburt1 04-10-2003 11:27 AM

LOL, definitely not. PMA is unreliable even for small dumps.

ryancooper 04-10-2003 11:57 AM

Great. . . How would I get my backup to the database then?

amykhar 04-10-2003 01:27 PM

search for backup over on the .com site. The command line way to do it is over there.

ryancooper 04-10-2003 04:02 PM

Well guys I had to drop the database and start over from scratch. I don;t have the time or will to try to save it.

I want to thank everyone who helped me I really do appreciate it!

Ryan :)

wooolF[RM] 04-10-2003 04:12 PM

what a shame...

Erwin 04-10-2003 08:27 PM

I feel your pain. :(

ryancooper 04-11-2003 04:00 PM

Ok guys I have another question. Luckely i found a backup from last month where the databse is only 200 and some megs.

What I old like to do is delete the attachments and search tables BEFORE I try to load the backup.

How can I open the .sql file on my local windows pc and remove the attachments table?

This alone is over 200 megs and should let me properly upload my backup.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Stu 04-11-2003 05:24 PM

ryan,
is the database compressed, or is it just the plain sql database backup ?
if it's plain sql then it'll be in plain text format.

if you cant figure a way to do this then as a fellow Disney board owner, if you dont mind me having your database, I can download it onto my home server delete what ever you want, Attachments, word, index etc and then upload it for you.

If you want any help, either PM me or you can find me at my site in my profile.
