*gg* Dpcows :)

@Skyrender: Dpcows is right, the best way is using hacks from here, try to understand how they work and then try to modify em to get experienced...

learning by doing is always the fastest way

lmao. But so true :p

There are no vB hacking books. You could buy some PHP books and learn. After all vB is powered by PHP and MySQL :ninja:

Skyrender 03-26-2003 08:21 PM

That is what I mean. Xenon, I've already tried to learn from other vBulletin hacks but I just don't get it :-/

N9ne 03-26-2003 09:22 PM

Xenon: If a person is new to PHP, they need to know some PHP before they can read vB hacks and files like their first language.

I can recommend any book from www.wrox.com, get Beginning PHP 4 :).

Xenon 03-26-2003 09:32 PM

@N9ne: nope, i've never heard of PHP before i worked on vb.
All my PHP i know from vb hacking, i just read a book long time after my first hacks to get some special knowledge to some functions...

Yes but your JAVA experience at uni has helped i'm sure :)?

Xenon 03-27-2003 03:12 PM

nope, completly wrong...
my PHP experience has helped me for JAVA at university..

N9ne 03-28-2003 06:22 PM

That's fine, but maybe you were lucky that you got hold of the way PHP works first time, but for most a book or some form of educating, is required...to get the basic idea!

Xenon 03-28-2003 06:27 PM

i wouldn't say that.
most of my fello programmers haven't learnt programming languages by reading books. They all learnt it while playing with the codes. You couldn't learn programming with just a book.
A book can help of course if you want to look up some functions for example, but php.net is a good ressource for that, too.

N9ne 03-28-2003 06:46 PM

'or some form of educating'

So reading the code can also come from that, ie. self education. However I do agree with you to a certain extent, I from time to time read PHP and try to understand it, it's a great way (and quite fast) to learn a lot of new things in PHP.
