We need a hack where a post posted in one forum is automatically posted into another specified forum. Is this possible and how?
Any suggestions?
Come on guys, this has got to be pretty easy - I just don't know enough PHP to figure it out :(.

Do you mean that EVERY new thread that is posted by ANYONE in Forum A is automatically duplicated in Forum B?
Now how should this work...that the thread is simply copied when it's posted, but after that, they are independent of each other, meaning you can reply in one thread and it stays there only, and the reply does not show up in the other one? Or do you want all replies to duplicate as well? |

I'd prefer the threads just get copied to the specified forum and replies get duplicated as well. I have replies disabled in the particular category, so I never really thought of that :). Dosen't really matter to me either, whatever can be designed fastest :). I assume it would be easier to just copy the thread and leave the new replies independant, as that would take less code modification. |
Would that be possible?

why would you want this?

I use Pluh News for my news and I need a cateogry which can display news from multiple categories. However the program can't do that/ So I figure the easiest way would be to put all posts into 1 forum and pull the news from there.
What you say you need sounds a little something like my "any forum news hack," which I know you're aware of because you posted to that thread. What exactly is it that you need that my other hack can't do? I might be able to adjust it for you.
It's not a matter fo what yours can't do, it's what's required to do it. Like a few other mentioned, it can become tedious to get something on the news page. And this installation is more involved then Pluh. In any case, the way my site is setup, it would be easier to just create a way to cross post.

Would no one but me have use for a hack like this?
Not really, especially since the free release of vbportal here which does exactly what u are trying:)
I don't think this one feature warrents installing an entire portal system.
The one portal system looks nice though :) -
Can't hurt to install it, vBPortal is extremely nice and I think you would personally get more use from it (having all sorts of features) over just having that one feature. |
But I will never use anything else. I can't imagine there is too many code changes nessecary to make this one feature work.
Right, but once it's been done in one form or another by someone they don't usually want to do a smaller version. Why wouldn't you use any of the other features? Sorry I can't help you, I saw what you wanted and thought to myself, vbP does that! But you don't want that :p :(
Who would want to go around modifying a million different files for just one feature? I doubt I'm alone on that one.
You don't have to modify a million files  , actually, you mod less than five and they are minor edits. Installing hacks from here was a lot more work in many instances.

What id you just d/l vbPortal and take a look at the code changes that allow what you want, that way you may find the answer without installing it.
I know just about 0 PHP, so that won't help.

OK, I'm bumping this thread.
Why do you want cross posting? Example from the board I operate, basketballboards.net. We have a Bulls' forum and a Celtics' forum. A poster in the Bulls' forum wants to know if the Celtics would trade player X for player Y. This happens constantly (trade ideas). So the poster in the Bulls' forum makes the post and the thread appears in the Bulls forum. Only if a Celtics forum regular comes to the Bulls' forum will they see the thread and maybe reply. With cross-posting, the Bulls' poster would create the thread in the Bulls AND Celtics forum. Replies to the thread would be seen in both forums. The way vBulletin (3.0.6) is now, as an Admin or Community Mod, you can move/copy the thread from the Bulls' forum to the Celtics' one and leave a link in the Bulls' forum. Problem is, it just says "moved" next to the link in the Bulls' forum, but never shows "last poster" and "last post date" and "number of replies" and "number of views" in the Bulls' forum (it does in the Celtics one though). Seems to me vBulletin has most of what's needed already with the ability to leave the "moved to other forum" bit of information in the original forum. This hack is HUGELY beneficial, but also has the potential for abuse. For example, someone wants to spam the board, they can do so by cross-posting to every forum. So some limit has to be provided, say in admincp, to the number of forums a thread can be cross-posted to. While at it, such a hack should allow the cross-posted threads to be made sticky in both forums. I'm surprised this isn't a built-in feature. It's a pretty important thing for a site manager to be able to cross polonate between his/her forums, or to otherwise drive traffic to lesser traffic forums. |
