I'll comment.

Do you hack your forum(s) and is that any way related to the issue you have with a version 2.2.1 being released next week?

webhost 11-10-2001 03:31 PM

First Freddie you already know the answer to that question I have talked to you numerous times. So all you want is it to be posted for all to see, I am not stupid. That really doesn't change anything though.

dirgotronix 11-15-2001 08:49 AM

If upgrading is such a pain in the ass, don't upgrade.

If you need to upgrade, don't complain. You put the hacks there of your own accord.

If you find yourself upgrading often, don't hack.

If you're not satisfied with that, write your own solution. I really don't think it would be that hard to write a script that would str_replace() any hacks you want to add in.

Tried beyond compare? I have so many hacks it isn't funny, and it took me no more than an hour or two to upgrade my forum.

Honestly here, you're complaining that you will have to redo unsupported hacks on a new version. Don't like it, don't upgrade. Need to upgrade, don't complain, jelsoft doesn't support hacks, you put them there yourself.

Sorry but you really don't have any idea how many scripts I have added or how big they are. The other point that you are not getting here are some of the bugs should have been fixed before release, I agree not all bugs can be fixed before release. But come on one of the main things on any forum is to be able to let me people register and that was even screwed up with activation email now that should of been checked. You must enjoy be a beta tester for other companies. That is good to know next time we come out with something new I will look you up and see if you want to try it. With all of your widsom you must be at least 50 right?

orca 11-15-2001 03:50 PM

Talking avbout bugs...I once read an interview with a lead programmer from a major company. He said, that every first release has (with all tests etc.) about 15'000 lines with bugs. Or even more.

Mark Hensler 11-16-2001 06:30 AM

webhost is starting to bug me. Can you get that one removed next release, please?

If you have ever worked on a large scale project, you would know that bugs are not only unavoidable, they are numerous.

You installed the hacks, so put up or shut up.

webhost 11-16-2001 07:04 AM

One thing that is good about this country of ours is everybody is entitled to their own point of view. That is all I will say about it tired of the subject because nothing will change anyway.

69-FLy-gUy 11-17-2001 07:23 AM

I probably wouldn't regularily post regarding this... But I would like to share my opinion in this matter...

Sure.. I will agree that upgrading with hacks can be a pain in the ass.. I don't deny that... But hey.. What can you do? If you need to upgrade to fix bugs.. then you need to upgrade.. Would you rather your board crash or not function properly because vB didn't want to release a new version so soon? Of course not.. You would be a lot more frustrated then...

I think that the upgrades are a good thing.. it lets you know that even after the product is released.. they are still making adjustments and making the board better than it already is...

As it has been pointed out many times.. you choose to install the hacks yourself.. not vb.. Sooner or later you know taht you are going to have to upgrade your board.. Sure.. you might lose your hacks.. but you can get it back.. granted that it may take a while.. BUT AT LEAST YOU WILL GET THEM... Its better than nothing isn't it???

If you look in one of the forums. i belive that it is the Full Releases.. They even tell you which files were modified so that it would make it EASIER for you to replace/fix the hacks... Did they have to do that? No.. they didn't.. they did that for us.. because they realize that we do put a lot of time into putting hacks on our board. and they are trying to help us out.. Then when you complain about it.. Don't you think that they may feel a little frustrated that they did something to help.. and all you did was complain?

This is my opinion on this.. and I realize that I open myself to criticism.. But I wanted to let you all know how I feel..

Thanks...

PS-vB .. You are doing a great job.. Keep up the good work=)

Always comment hacks, and make sure to keep a hack list. Two simple rules that keep upgrading simple. Also since they are releasing a list with all the files changed, all that's needed is to upload a few files and upgrade14 in my sitaution and boom done. The nall I have to do is go through my hack list and re-edit the few files that have changed... Not to difficult.

my .02 ;)

plus look, this forum is now running 2.2.1.....

Sinecure 11-17-2001 09:03 AM

Thanks to Firefly :)

webhost 11-17-2001 01:39 PM

Another Great Release, All things I have read and heard is it is a flawless install, hardly no problems at all.

Thanks again

To those complaining, there is no real reason to upgrade unless you are experiencing problems with 2.2.0. I will upgrade 2 of my 3 boards - one of them works fine on 2.2.0 at the moment, so it doesn't need upgrading. One of them is in desperate need of an upgrade as it is still on 2.0.2, and the other has experienced issues with 2.2.0 so I'll be taking that up to 2.2.1 as soon as I get a free hour or so.

It brings absolutely no new features, so it's your choice. Live with 2.2.0's bugs, or upgrade.

I did the upgrade, took about 45 minutes with my hacks list and abour 19+ hacks plus 3 custom hacks :D no differences but I feel better now.

Crinos 11-18-2001 05:56 PM

My say on this? If you install hacks, then that makes YOU totally responsible for it... it's not gonna be anyone's fault if you can't upgrade because of your hacks - except yourself.

Yeah, of course Jelsoft could make it easier for hackers to upgrade, but that's not their priority. Upgrades are not done with the hacker in mind. So hackers don't have any say whatsoever on how Jelsoft should issue their updates.

And as was previously mentioned, if there's nothing wrong with your board, then don't upgrade. If there's a security fix, then by all means upgrade. Besides, before you hacked your boards I am sure you have known that upgrading it will bea pain ... so no need to cry bloody murder for something you have already expected...

LuBi 11-18-2001 09:04 PM

Wow, I don't think that helped one person.. nice

God is my witness, it took me 10 minutes to upgrade the (so very hacked) files, and another 3 minutes to upload them and run the upgrade14 script.

And we're talking about a very hacked board.

There is a reason why Jelsoft recommends Beyond Compare, it makes upgrading your hacked board so easy.
I actually use Araxis Merge, which is by far better than Beyond Compare. But that's not the point.
The point is, if you hacked your files, you can sure check them for differences, especially when you got all those great programs to help you with it!

I'm posting a screen shot just to show you how easy it is to compare files, and reinstate hacks.

I downoaded Beyond Compare for the 2.0.3 to 2.2.0 upgrade. I was amazed at how easy it was. And I didn't even really know how to use BC yet. Tubedogg also mentioned Merge is much better. But, I can live with BC for now. :)

Mark Hensler 11-19-2001 05:14 AM

I did a google....
Ariaxis Merge
Beyond Compare

A few points I'd like to make:

No, I don't know how many scripts you have added. That doesn't take away from the fact that you added them, and it is not Jelsoft's responsibility to make your life easier for that.
Some bugs can't be found without mass testing. This is why Microsoft has the beta signups to get thousands of people testing. You can't find every picky little bug on every release. And with how much people were screaming to release it, I'm not surprised that it came out a bit early. Blame the customers for that.
I do enjoy beta testing. I like figuring things out, how they work, and I enjoy tinkering with new things. I've always been that way.
I know people twice times my age who are complete idiots. I also know people younger than me with far more skill in many things I do than I will ever have. I really don't think my age has anything to do with the release time between versions of vB.
You chose to add the hacks, you chose to make it more difficult to upgrade. This is not Jelsoft's fault.

He bashed my age as well in an ICQ conversation, only it was more like "What could you possibly know?"

I think it takes a man desperate to make a point to stoop low enough to start scrutinizing others to that degree. I hope he's never employed by someone younger than him.

webhost 11-20-2001 08:58 AM

Let the bashing stop. You 2 guys took it the wrong way on the age, I know alot of guys that are even younger than both of you that are very capable of all different kinds of programming including php, perl, c++ etc. So age has nothing to do with it all, it is just how you reply to other people comments that upset some people. All I did was state my point of view. Alot of people share that same point of view, both of you showed your age when you not only shared your point of view which some points I agreed with but you took it to another extreme and started bashing me for my point of view. Hell Mark I even asked you if you had read the other post on vbulletin.com which you stated that you had not, so you started blasting away at me before you even saw what eveyone else had stated in that thread. Seems to me you were just wanting to get your name seen. If both of you guys want to continue bashing so be it but I am done with this topic.

Thanks for the links. I was just about to post and ask Firefly where to get Ariaxis Merge, since he would definitely know the link. Thanks again :)

Admin 12-02-2001 11:33 AM

Keep in mind Araxis is only available for free in its trial version, I think it stops after about 30 days or something like that.

And so does Beyond Compare if I am not mistaken? It's sad that they stop running after a while, but at least it gives you a taste of what you are missing by not bying it :D
