I bit the bullet and bought a PS3

I recently got a PS3, mainly for the blu-ray player, but have been having a blast playing a little game called 3D Dot Game Heroes. Has anyone heard of it or played it yet? It is based on the Zelda genre of games.

FreshFroot 12-30-2010 05:56 AM

noooooooooooooooooo why!!!

I was going to buy it for the blu-ray too. I'm happy I didn't. I ended up winning a bluray player for free at a raffle.

I went with a 360. It's more common and overall I am happy I went with it.

I hate the ps3 controller, less games, less players.

Boofo 12-30-2010 06:34 AM

I don't play on the net with it. I don't even have it hooked up for that. Not really interested in that part of it. I like the PS3 controller. Pretty much like the PS2 controller, IIRC.

Anyone else have a PS3 and either played the game I mentioned or seen it?

Princeton 12-30-2010 01:16 PM

we are an XBOX 360 household - 3 elites in the house; 1 Wii collecting dust after a month use, and 1 PS3 - use it to play blu-ray movies

nowadays, you can purchase a blu-ray players for cheap

Boofo 12-30-2010 02:02 PM

I thought about the Xbox, but I don't play that many games to warrant it. The PS3 has the blu-ray, plus games, if I find one or two that I can handle, so it was the better choice at the time. Also, I got a great deal on it so I really couldn't pass it up. I'm getting to the age where my reaction time isn't what it used to be so some of the games are way beyond my depth now. That is another reason I didn't go with the Xbox. I might have gone with the Wii if they had a blu-ray player in it and better graphics (HD).

G0F0RBR0KE 12-30-2010 03:38 PM

I have 2 PS3 and I am happy with the console itself.

The difference between a 360 and PS3 is community. Yes, 360 does have a huge community because it was CHEAPER and people can afford it (That's why you guys get RROD easily). 360 doesn't have much of a good title anyways.. Gears of War, meh...Halo..no..just drop the subject...Alan Awake? They tried to make it as good as Heavy Rain...

PS3 has excellent titles...

Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2, GT, God of War (Game is a beast), we used to have DMC but 360 were crying to play it and not to mention Final Fantasy...Microsoft paid them and they try to keep it the same level..The graphic could of been way better in PS3 and we could of had Japanase's dub instead of English's Dub.

I have 3D Dot and it's an excellent game. Create your own character and play the same style as Zelda. Epic game. :)

Actually, I have 3 PS3..one of them just died on me cause my friend were trying to plug in some cords and it landed on my PS3 :-(. However, I fix it and it's running good. :)

I do have a 360 and a Wii and I am more happy with my PS3 since I don't have to pay service to play online. Doesn't matter if they provide "Less lag" because PS3..I haven't experience any lag at all.

KevinL 12-30-2010 03:40 PM

I love my PS3. Use it mostly for the blu-ray...also Netflix now.

Lynne 12-30-2010 04:34 PM

We have a PS3. Hubby is currently playing it quite a bit with his new Grand Turismo. He's got a steering wheel for it and a whole chair all set up for his driving games. It's cute. :) We also use it for blu-ray and netflix.

BirdOPrey5 12-31-2010 05:07 AM

I have all 3 (PS3 / 360 / Wii) (long story) but I basically don't play any of them... of the 80 hours I may have spent on them all year, 75 of them were various Call of Duties on the XBox 360... I like the controller better and it just seems easier/quicker to use... a simple on/off button and eject button, not like I have to slide my finger around to find a sweet spot on the PS3. The headset is easier on the 360, no worry about pairing bluetooths that then need to be kept charged... oh I admit the PS3 is technically superior but Microsoft has them beat on usability... Plus I had netflix streaming for years without needing a disc- that just recently came to PS3 and Wii.

Boofo 12-31-2010 05:14 AM

I have been trying to figure out how to set up the wifi on the PS3. I have it across the room from my cable modem and computer and have no way to have them together to make it work. How would you go about setting it up for net access? I do have cable going into the cable channel box (from a cable splitter) which is right above the PS3. And how fast of a connection do you need for Netflix to work reliably?

cyberchief 12-31-2010 02:21 PM

I have a lynksys wireless router. Cost about $100. The gaming systems should all have wireless cards in them already... personally, I think that is the best way to go. If you move the gaming system to another computer, you will still have internet connectivity. I have the Wii. And I pretty much only use it to watch netflix or play mario cart. Really useless otherwise (yes, I regret getting it). Previous to that... I had the OLD Nintendo. So, needless to say, I wasn't really up on gaming systems. Went 15+ years with no gaming system.

Digital Jedi 12-31-2010 05:38 PM

I still have a PS1, from the days when they were calling it the PSX.

And that's all I've got. I would get a PS3 if I could afford it. I like some of the games for it and some of the games for the 360. I've never really been a console fan-boy. I take games case by case, but I do try to buy based on who has the more games I can get access to and that I actually want to play. That fluctuates from year to year.

It's very simple to do. Just scroll to your network settings and set up a connection. Follow the onscreen instructions and use the default settings. Shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to set up. Wireless works just fine with the netflix set up or if you use any media sharing applications on your computer.

How do I set up a connection if I don't have anything hooked to the PS3 or the cable modem for it?

BirdOPrey5 01-03-2011 03:53 AM

Do you have wifi at home?

No, I have a cable modem hooked up to my computer is all. That is what I am asking. How do I hook up the PS3 for wifi on a wired cable modem that is across the room?

BirdOPrey5 01-03-2011 04:50 AM

You can't, you'd need to add a Wireless Access Point (as opposed to a Wireless Router) to the network to use wifi. It's just that most cable modems these days seem to have wifi built in.

It's actually a 4 port router modem that I have hooked to the computer via an ethernet cable. So, what do I need to get to get the PS3 hooked to the internet? That was my main question before.

BirdOPrey5 01-03-2011 12:14 PM

You can hook the PS3 via an ethernet cable just like the computer, that's actually a little better than wifi and how I have mine connected- you just need to run a cable from the router to the PS3.

It's kind of hard to do when it is across the room and no where near the computer.

What do this have to do with hooking up the PS3 to the net? The kinect is the move-type controller system.

BirdOPrey5 01-03-2011 12:57 PM

Oh I see... sorry... You have two options...

1) Buy a wifi access point and connect PS3 via Wifi... This I think is the best idea because there will only be more and more things using wifi like ipads, kindles, digital picture frames, all types of gadgets... you should get with the times. :p

2) Buy a ethernet over powerline (Amazon Link) adapter- there are several models out there, this is just one as an example, I haven't used any personally but they have high ratings. This will allow you to plug an ethernet cable into an outlet on one side of the house, convert the ethernet signal to run over your home's power lines, and then use another adapter to convert the signal back to ethernet more near the PS3.

Digital Jedi 01-03-2011 12:59 PM

3) Have someone stand holding the PS3 by the computer.

Glad I could be useful.

Is it noticeable I haven't slept in 24 hours?

And there is the problem. I havbe no idea what to buy and everything that I would need. I'm not as tech savvy as you youngsters are. I can tear down and build up a computer, but anything further than that, and I get all fuzzy in my thinking. Age will catch up to you all oneday, too. ;)

As long as you never get any power surges, huh? ;)

Are you volunterring? ;)

kh99 01-03-2011 01:08 PM

You could just run a network cable across the floor like I do in my house. :)

I'd have to have 1 that is at least 10 feet though. Do they even make them that long?

I read somewhere that the maximum length for network cables before their so long that performance begins to degrade is 100 meters. But then, I read that on another forum, so I don't really know where that info comes from, or how the 100 meter cables are made.

kh99 01-03-2011 01:22 PM

I think I'm using a 50 foot cable. http://www.monoprice.com is a good place for stuff like that.

But of course I'm just kidding. I really do have a long wire running across the floor, but normal people go with the wireless option. :)

the ps3 is sooo 2006 :p
The kinect has some really cool "hacking" options, so that would be my choice.

We don't watch dvd'd or blueray, and I have enough peripherals that are connected online :)

Glad you like your ps3 :)

Can you recommend a good one from there? I don't understand what the 350 MHz has to do with ethernet cables.

Product ID: 2151
25FT Cat5e 350MHz UTP ETHERNET Network CABLE - Black

The kinect is an add-on for the Xbox, you do realize that, right? ;)

And, to be truthful, the Xbox is also "sooo 2006", or whenever it was dumped on the market by Billy and his boys. I wouldn't have anything other than blu-ray now that I have experienced it. The PS3 offers the best of both worlds, gaming and movies. Look how well the HD-DVD did. Another Microsoft blunder? ;)

Then how do you know the kinect is any good? Or that the Xbox is really a piece of crap in disguise?
I just think it's pretty cool the stuff you can do with it, do a search on youtube for kinect hacks and you'll see what I mean.
I can post some video links if you wish.
I'm not trying to fight with anyone here, just stating my opinion that I think the technology is pretty slick.

Guess I'll just leave this convo since apparently a few people think I'm trying to fight, which I'm obviously not..

That is good to know. In the old days, it wasn't so easy. Cable signal degradation was a way of life.

I was just messing with you on the Xbox. It really is a "cute" gaming system. I just keep thinking about the 100,000 units they had to recall when they first came out due to the main board error. Microsoft has always been a day late and a dollar short on cleaning up on ideas that they initially passed on. The only bad thing about the PS3 is that it is very hard to program games for. That has turned off a few developers from the system, as they chose the easy route and go for the Xbox.

BirdOPrey5 01-03-2011 02:43 PM

You can search Amazon or Bestbuy or whatever your favorite site is for "Wireless Access Point" - Here is one for an example. There are cheaper ones (wireless G) but wireless N is the newer/faster/better type. It will come with a setup CD, you'll probably just have to plug it into your cable modem/router via an included ethernet cable- then follow the setup CD and it will walk you through setting up the access point and securing it with a WPA passcode. Then on PS3 you setup wireless network settings, put in the network name and passcode, and you should be connected.

Nope, no wife here. ;)

Actually, the cable modem I have is supposed to handle wireless, but it has a sucky wireless speed. That is why I have it hooked up via ethernet to the computer.
