DVI to HDMI help
ok guys today i got a DVI to HDMI cable
i plugged the DVI end into my tower.. i plugged the HDMI into my DGM 32inch tv found it on HDMI2 Input.screen comes up fine. only problem is i cant change the resolution just for the TV. its cut half the end off either side and doesnt show the top or the bottom of what would be my desktop showing on the TV my graphics card is geforce 9500GT anyone help with this problem? |
I have a TV as my second monitor like that. I used the NVIDIA control panel (right click on the background) and under Display => Set up Multiple Displays I chose "Configure independently" or something like that, then I went to Resolution and was able to change them separately.
|
for some reason i dont have the option to choose "configure independantly" cannot seem to find anything like that in my nvidia panel under multy displays
|
Hmm...the only thing I can think is to make sure you have the latest NVIDIA stuff (and reboot if you haven't). I don't know, maybe it's something that's only a feature of certain cards.
|
ill check my drivers and update if needed and see whats what :)
|
There is a utility called "PowerStrip" available here:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/PowerStr...nload-169.html It should allow you to set a custom resolution, one of which should fit nicely on your HDTV. I used this utility several years ago for the same problem, though it has since been updated to work with the latest graphics cards. |
thanks. thing i see with that is "OS Support: Windows 95 to the x64-bit edition of Vista"
im on windiws 7. does it support it? --------------- Added [DATE]1292676511[/DATE] at [TIME]1292676511[/TIME] --------------- i downloaded powerstrip.installed. ran it. cant see option for my HD TV though.. ive got my tv on currently with my desktop showing.. so i know its working.just cannot figure how to change it |
Have you checked out "Advanced settings" on your NVIDIA settings, should be a way to enable multi-monitor support...
|
1 Attachment(s)
dont seem to have that setting.i f you see the attachment you can see my panel
|
What does your "Set up multiple displays" page look like?

see attachment mate
|
Hmm...mine's different, don't know if it's the card model or the fact that I have Windows XP.
Maybe I steered you wrong - maybe it's not supposed to be done from the NVDIA panel in Windows 7. Does this help at all? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976064 |
thanks for help mate ive already done that. ive got it setup fine its just the taskbar is cut off on the HD tv and bits off the top and left and right. but cannot for the life of me find a solution to change just the resolution for the HDtv.
ill keep searching :P |
I knew you had the two monitors working, but the bottom of that page seems to show controls for setting the resolution.
Anyway, good luck. :) Maybe someone else who knows will see this... |

Otherwise you'll need to lower your resolution on the primary display until it works on both. |
i lowered the resolution to 800 x 600 and still didnt work lol
ah so i cant even have HDTV as my primary monitor then as i cannot get the resolution correct even when its set as primary and extended |
Is your 32" TV 720p, 1080i, or 1080p?
|
1080p mate :)
|
1080p should be 1920×1080 resolution... does you card go that high?
It should be your optimal picture... When you said like "half" your image was lost, was it really half or was it more like 10 to 20%... 10-20% can be explained by "oversan" which is a different issue. |
yes its my native screen resolution.
about 10% in total i would say |
That is likely lost due to overscan then- in Television the picture usually goes past the visible screen so you never see the edges- the area about 10% in from the edge is considered the "safe" area- you'll never see anything of vital importance (phone numbers, sub titles, etc...) put too close to the edge because they can't be sure every TV will show up to the edge.
Now most TV's I've seen are usually built "smart" enough to know when using a computer input there doesn't need to be overscan at all... I say "most" because my own HDTV is like yours and was not built this way- at full resolution I lose about 10% of my screen on all sides due to overscan. With PowerStrip however I was able to choose a resolution just a little smaller than the native resolution and it fit my TV screen perfectly. But it's been 3 years since I did this so I'm trying to remember my exact steps. Does PowerStrip give you a number of resolution options? I had maybe 3 or 4 options before PowerStrip, after installing I had like 10 choices... one of them worked perfect. |
I'm going out on a limb here but I believe it's your TV model... I run a 40" 1080p via DVI on my primary PC despite having a nvidia 260 gtx becuase my mobo is older w/o the hdmi capability. Now my daughter plays Disney's Pirates Online and I recently snagged a decent emerson 32" 720p off newegg a few weeks back and she loves it! We run it via hdmi from my wifes laptop since it has 4gb of memory otherwise McKinley won't play on her desktop only 1gb lol but long story short, same thing with it and no options in any of the controls or menus to adjust and I resize the window for Pirates so it all fits. I would dare say that's why I paid upwards of $1000 about 2 years back for the 40" and only $200 for the 32", time has passed so they are cheaper but so is what they put inside and how they think ahead. Now I'm no expert on TV's by any means so if you do get something sorted let me know so my daughter can thank you :D.

on powerstrip i have got my native reso..and rest are 1768 x 992 and lower. no option to make a custom one for some reason. ive tryed every reso on the powerstrip but all cut it off still so its abit weird. i have option to create custom in my nvidia panel
--------------- Added [DATE]1292765625[/DATE] at [TIME]1292765625[/TIME] --------------- ok guys i finaly figured it out basicly iwent into my nvidia control panel i turned my monitor off on the multy moniter section.so it only shows on my tv. i then clicked resize desktop. resized it so it fit the screen. then added my monitor back and clicked "duplicate hdtv settings" and now both fit fine |
