1 Attachment(s)
Introducing Forum Runner for the iPhone/iPad/Android vBulletin!

Security Update - Version 1.7.5, Please Update Your Installation

http://www.forumrunner.com

What is Forum Runner?

Forum Runner is a vBulletin mod that allows your users to browse your forum using a native Android/iPhone/iPad client. This means faster access for those users since it only downloads the actual forum information rather than all the extraneous images that slow down the mobile connection.

Forum Runner now supports the iPad natively! Download the Forum Runner app once and support both iPhone and iPad versions in one universal app!

iOS 4 multitasking on the iPhone is fully supported by Forum Runner.

Forum Runner is FREE for forum owners to install, and takes less than 5 minutes. The client for the iPhone/iPad/Android costs 1.99$ which is LESS THAN THE COMPETITORS, and has more features. Please see the list below for full information on Forum Runner's features.

Forum Runner inherits all the security built into vBulletin, so users running Forum Runner will only be able to see the same forums and threads as they could using a regular browser.

Forum Runner Feature List
  • Native Android/iPad/iPhone support
  • iOS 4 multitasking support
  • Browse your favorite forums in an easy-to-use-interface with multiple notification types (private message, subscription, etc)
  • Fully customizable home screen with your favorite forums
  • FREE PUSH NOTIFICATION SUPPORT : Get private message and subscribed thread updates from your favorite forums in the background!
  • Poll updates (private messages/subscriptions) from favorites on home screen - shows you a summary of which forums you have new messages or subscriptions on!
  • Graphical display of polls - view results and vote on polls
  • Moderation tools for your moderators/admins (close/open thread, stick/unstick thread, move thread, delete posts, etc)
  • Image attachment thumbnail and full size viewing from threads
  • View a thread's image attachments in one convenient screen (much like the native iPhone "Photo" app)
  • Save thread images to your iPhone/iPod touch library
  • Fully searchable forums!
  • Multi-quote support
  • View embedded links without leaving the app, including YouTube videos
  • Supports portrait AND landscape mode
  • Full posting options (quote posts, start new thread, etc)
  • Attach unlimited photos from your library (or take a photo from the camera and attach it)
  • Full support for private messages and private message folders
  • Full support for thread subscriptions - track your favorite threads and be updated via push when they have new posts!
Forum Runner currently supports vBulletin 3.6.x, 3.7.x, 3.8.x and 4.0.x. We are adding support for other mobile phones as well as forum software.

There is a Free version available in the iTunes App Store and Google Market as well which allows your users to try out Forum Runner before making a decision to buy it. It has all the features of the full version except that it does not have the ability to post threads and a few other differences which are outlined on http://www.forumrunner.com.

You should really note in all your threads that push notifications are not free and because of this u lose the one useful feature of an app over a skin. Paying a subscription for push notifications ruined this app.

ClemsonJeeper 04-19-2010 03:13 PM

Good call. I went ahead and updated the posts. Thanks for the feedback.

bada_bing 04-19-2010 06:30 PM

Wow this look pretty nice and a + for having options like search and push notifications over the competition being TapaTalk. The only difference is this, members have to pay to receive push notices with will be the kill of this app especially when rumors are that competitors like Tapatalk will offer this for no additional charge, yes your app is cheaper at an up-front cost to the users BUT long term which is more important from a cost of ownership prospective is more expensive to own this app due to charging from additional functionality.

ClemsonJeeper 04-19-2010 07:01 PM

Good to know. Right now push is free (unlimited) since the push service is still in beta. We need to see what kind of strain the push service puts on the servers once a good many larger forums get online and that will likely affect the decision to charge when we come out of beta on the push servers.

But right now, when you sign up for push notifications it is unlimited.

(UPDATE: Ignore the comments to stay away in the message below... The author of this program is AMAZING and QUICKLY fixed all issue with this mod! This is an amazing application and the iPhone Client seems better then Tapatalk with its ability to search and edit messages...)

Stay away from this one for awhile...

Unlike Tapatalk this one puts additional queries on your server and has uncached templates. (Not good if your a big board like mine)

It also adds a nag to your site so everytime someone connects with an iPhone to your site they get a popup telling them to check out this forum runner program.

I have disabled this one for now, in the hopes these issues can be addressed and fixed.

For now we will keep Tapatalk as our main iPhone client.

I like the idea, but the charge i dowt anyone who pay it to view forums though. I'll install but i dowt ill use it, i might test it for a week and see how many people use it and if not many cause of the prices, i think ill disable it.

ClemsonJeeper 04-21-2010 11:47 PM

Update 1.2.6 contains fixes for forums running VBSEO, as well as some other smaller fixes. See the CHANGELOG file for details!

scottct1 04-22-2010 12:46 PM

ClemsonJeeper worked with me last night to fix a number of issues.

He got the caching and query issue taken care of now which is excellent progress!

Some things are not working still on my site and this is because of vbseo, but ClemsonJeeper is working hard trying to fix the issues. He had mad a lot of progress since yesterday.

If you don't have vbseo then go for it, the program is a nice program, however if you have vbseo hold off a day or two more until he has it fully working.

scottct1 04-22-2010 01:16 PM

I am happy to report that ClemsonJeeper has fixed all of the issues and now that its fixed all that I can say is WOW the iPhone program is a lot better then Tapatalk!

You can search, edit members posts and more. And its also very snappy.

Great work!

TNCclubman 04-22-2010 01:56 PM

when is someone going to launch a vb app for free. In this day and age withe free apps for facebook, Its suicide to charge people to view our websites.

scottct1 05-03-2010 01:53 PM

If you contact ClemsonJeeper he can make a custom version of the program for your website which you can in turn give away for free.

Sure it costs something to have a custom version made, but its worth it. :)

ClemsonJeeper 05-03-2010 05:12 PM

We have just released version 1.3.0 of the add-on which adds support for:

Hi,

Just a word of caution of implementing Google Adsense for Mobile Content on an actual iPhone app - The Google license agreement stated that the usage of Adsense for Mobile Content should be limited to mobile web-site, not mobile application. There is a risk of Google banning your entire Adsense account if they found you are violating the agreement, although we haven't heard of any incident of it.

We strongly advise all the forum owners to evaluate this risk before attempting to inserting Adsense for Mobile Content Advertisement into any iPhone or Android native application.

Here you can find the Google Adsense for Mobile Content license agreement:
https://www.google.com/adsense/suppo...y?answer=71600

And more discussion related to this topic:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/...7baa6821&hl=en

This is the exact reason that at Tapatalk we have not yet ready of inserting this kind of banner into the app until we received more clarification from Google.

TNCclubman 05-04-2010 01:20 PM

Clemson, how much do you charge to make a custom one for our websites so we dont have to charge people for the apps?

Also, my site is very photo intensive, so does your app view our photo gallerines well? ie full page and you can just swipe your finger to move from 1 pic to the next? thanks for the info!

You have a PM.

Regarding the photo galleries, we support photos as attachments or links from threads - support for the built in vBulletin galleries is almost done.

Do you use a third party gallery software?

AlexanderT 05-05-2010 11:13 PM

You may want to add that through your push services notices go through a third party server (http://push.forumrunner.net/push.php) before reaching the user's client. This may or may not raise privacy concerns.

ClemsonJeeper 05-06-2010 12:41 AM

I can make that note, however no personal information is transmitted. The most information that is transmitted is a person's username you received a PM from or the thread title that had a subscription update.

Fantastic application. Added my site and downloaded the application.

Currently #1 new arrival: http://www.maskedcrusader.com/

Thanks again for the wonderful product.

Any news on a Blackberry type application like this? I have quite a lot of Blackberry users that use my forums. Just curious!

Currently working on an Android version. Blackberry is next on the list!

We aim to provide as good of a user experience on the other platforms as we do on the iPhone!

Masked Crusader 05-07-2010 06:19 AM

Fantastic to hear!

One question. How do you "favorite" a site? I would like to favorite my own but cannot figure out how the heck to do it.

Thanks!

ClemsonJeeper 05-07-2010 12:24 PM

You are one of hundreds of people that have asked that. Bad UI decision on my part!

The new version that is in review makes it more obvious, but in the current version:

Tap "More" tab. Tap "Profile" tab. Tap the heart in the uppre right corner.

In the new version its right on the main page in the action button "Mark as Favorite"!

ClemsonJeeper 05-07-2010 08:25 PM

Version 1.3.1 of the add-on has been released:

* Fix issue with international forums with PHP that does not have the mbstring module
* Add support for AME (Auto Media Encoder) tags
* Fix issue with certain forums not being able to verify

DieselTruck 05-09-2010 02:53 AM

I added a Icon after I added the directory and all, how do I get it to show up now? Remove and reinstate into your directory?

ClemsonJeeper 05-09-2010 02:03 PM

You should be able to just add it in the forum manager. There was an issue with caching in earlier versions. Make sure you have the latest forum runner (1.1.3) installed.

Note the free version is still at 1.1.2 because apple still hasn't approved the update.

If you still don't see it, send me a pm!

DieselTruck 05-13-2010 05:06 AM

Got it working, whats the ETA for other mobile phone support?

ClemsonJeeper 05-13-2010 02:22 PM

1.3.2 released, maintenance update including:

1.3.2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Fix some push notification issues
* Fix some searching issues

ClemsonJeeper 05-13-2010 02:31 PM

I forgot to post this up here, if you are using push notifications, you can now configure what push notifications you want to receive (private message, subscription) as well as configure what time during the day you want these notifications sent to you.

So if you don't want to be notified at 3AM that someone posted in a thread you are subscribed to, you can now specify which hours you want notifications sent to you!

You can do this by logging into the Push Notification manager at:

http://www.forumrunner.net/?p=push

and look at the bottom of the page. The settings are there.

ClemsonJeeper 05-19-2010 03:36 PM

1.3.3 has been released:

* Fix issues with "Cyb - Advanced Permissions Based on Post Count" add-on and posting new threads/replies/private messages
* Fix issue with thumbnail display when gd/gd2 is not installed, but imagemagick is
* Fix issue with forums with threads that haven't been updated in a while not showing up
* Fix issue with polling for updates from Home Page updating your last login time
* Add support for different configurable Google AdSense locations

ClemsonJeeper 05-23-2010 06:30 PM

iPhone App Version 1.1.4 has been submitted to Apple with the following changes:

* Add support for making subforums Favorite - to use, simply drill down to the subforum you wish to make a favorite, hit the "Action" button in the upper right corner, and choose "Add to Favorites"
* Added "Help" tab for online help - this will be updated as questions come in.
* Fix various UI Issues
* Add setting "Show Thread Preview" which will allow you to disable thread previews and display more threads per page
* Fix issue with people who declined push notifications just getting a black screen on launch

ClemsonJeeper 05-27-2010 12:19 AM

Version 1.3.5 has been released:

* Fix a few more issues with Arabic forums
* Fix image thumbnail generation issues on forums without libgd/libgd2 installed

For what it is worth. AVS Forum choose ForumRunner for our dedicated app. Here is the press release on it...

AVS Forum Goes Mobile with Free iPhone App

Rochester, NY, June 1, 2010 – AVS Forum, the premiere on-line community for home theater enthusiasts, is going mobile via a newly released iPhone application. The AVS Forum App is now available for download via Apple’s iTunes. Just search AVSFOURM.

“AVS Forum has always been about two things -- staying at the fore front of technology and fans of home theater sharing with one another. This new App makes those easier than ever. It is exciting for AVS Forum to provide a dedicated iPhone application to our increasingly mobile site members," stated AVS Forum representatives.

The application was developed for AVS Forum by End of Time Studios, LLC, producers of Forum Runner. AVS Forum chose the Forum Runner platform based on the features, the development support, and the custom programming capabilities needed for this unique environment. The free application will enable registered AVS Forum Members to:

• Search and post to the forums directly from the iPhone
• Receive push notices of subscribed threads and private messages
• Browse forums in an easy-to-use interface
• Fully customize their home screen with favorite forums
• View embedded links without leaving the application
• View pages in portrait or landscape mode (it’s all about widescreen!)
• Send attachments, taken from the built in camera or the image library

AVS Forum continues, "We envision news being brought instantly to the AVS community from AVS members who are attending trade shows such as CEDIA Expo, CES, or InfoCom. Users can see product release and new technology introductions as they happen. Everyone can benefit in some way from this mobile application." Support for the iPad and Android are also under development.

To visit the AVS Forum log on to www.avsforum.com. For more information about the AVS Forum contact press@avsforum.com.
