Upgrading To Vista 64bit
I currently have a Dell Vostro 1700 Laptop with the following specs:
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Business (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1 (6001.vistasp1_gdr.090302-1506) BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A07 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5670 @ 1.80GHz Memory: 2046MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 10 Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Dedicated Memory: 241 MB Current Mode: 1440 x 900 (32 bit) (60Hz) https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2009/04/31.jpg I also want 4GB RAM to go with that.. Questions: How much would it all cost? (? GBP) Can i run Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit? Can my laptop handle 64bit OS's? How much would it cost for DELL to install the 4GB and OS? Thanks! |
hey, read your screeny... 32-bit operating system... all your answers are there, i don't understand why you ask...

Take a look around Google UK for the best prices, I use Dabs.com for a lot of my purchases, you can order RAM and OS from them together.

Ive seen Vista Buisness to Vista Ultimate..i take it that isnt the 64bit version? http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...mfgpid=1182386 If its a fresh install is that wiping my HDD? |
you can run the software version of the 64bits if it let you install, but you will miss the performances... i have Vista Ultimate 64b on my Mac, and it does not care what CPU i have, it's a Mac anyway so it does not recognize my Intel... (ok, it's a 128bits SSE4 engine so i don't care)

Save your money and Download the Windows 7 RC this week. Upgrade to that and then upgrade to the final when its released. No reason to go to Vista 64 when Windows 7 will be available soon. Better performance, better user interface, better applications. Windows 7 will even do better with only 2 GB of RAM.

Mine only has 2 slots both with 1GB in..
|
in that case you'd have to purchase 2, 2gb sticks of ram, try www.crucial.com they're quite cheap for ram, however it all depends if your motherboard is capable of using 2 gb stick of ram!
|
Ok,
Here is the pic from crucial.com http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...r/crucial1.jpg http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...r/crucial2.jpg I i where to purchase that and get some to install it how much would my system recognize max(32bit,vista business) ? i know its around 3GB but if it is 3GB can i use the other 1GB to be shared GFX memory? |

World of Warcraft Age of Conan (DirectX 10 version) City of Heroes/Villains Red Alert 3 Command & Conquer 3 I doubt I would have any problems with other games either. It runs anything I throw at it including old games when I bought when my son was a toddler 15 years ago. Often times there is a performance increase. My computer isn't state of the art (dual-core 2.6 GHZ AMD processor, 6 GB RAM, 320 GB drive, NVIDIA 8600 GT w 512 MB) but I would say there is a 25-30% performance increase in my games over Vista 32-bit. |
Doesnt Matter.
Just buying 4GB ram and get someone to fit it when i receive it. CoD4 CoDWaW CSS CS 1.6 Soldier Front (sfront.ijji.com) How much is windows 7 going to be anyway? |

If you want free upgrades on your OS, switch to Linux. |

although you may see it shows it can see 4gb, it will only use 3gb. :) As far as upgrading to 64 bit I would suggest it to anyone who multi task's, I have updated all of my systems to 64 bit and there is a very good performance gain to be had. --------------- Added [DATE]1241288993[/DATE] at [TIME]1241288993[/TIME] --------------- and to add to this, windows 7 will not be released until the 4th quarter of this year at best... most likely 2010 q1 |
Ok,
I got the 4GB ram on thursday, i then phoned the PC guy and there was no answer phoned him again and still no answer so i couldnt be bothered waiting for i installed it myself..and it worked lol.. Only registers 3.5GB though =( |
yes 32 bit systems will only use 3gb, even if you install more. :)

My Windows 7 system uses less resources and is a lot more responsive than the same computer running Vista. Haven't really had many problems with it. Only issue is that I have to run Firefox in Vista compatibility mode but that is due to GoToMeeting not recognizing OS versions properly. |

Furthermore, under 32-bit Windows, a single application can only access 2 GB of RAM. The kernel "reserves" the rest. (IIRC) |
something really wrong with win7
locked up numerous times using kapersky as the virus checker. And i found it locked up doing other small jobs as well and had to press reset to get back to my other OS. It looks good but it needs more work (i was using the 64 bit version of win7) |
Win7 is working flawlessly (generally), with no showstopper bugs for me. Try running it without Kaspersky and see if the problems go away.
|
WIN7 has been great for me since they first put it out for beta test. no major bugs at all, and fast. i will be upgrading to the RC asap.

Trendmicro pccillin is smooth sailing with Win7

I dont like norton stuff as i class them as bloatware. Thats the main problem with upgrading - that is getting a virus checker and firewall to work. Also on a side note - i can get Internet access in Win 7 but for the love of money i cant get a connection to msn (just says server is busy - try again later) Yet it aint because if i reset and pick my other OS i can connect to MSN straight away. |

It's a known issue if you upgrade one beta version to another. |
The win7 RC is available and can be run till 01,June 2010.
I installed the 64bit version on a spare partition and it flies. This is waaaaaaaay better than 64bit Vista . It picked up and dealt with all the hardware in seconds and has so far run flawlessly all day. I would definitely not upgrade to Vista 64 at this stage, wait for win7. |
running 64 versions of any new OS brings with it new problems.
Software wont install and the one i wanted : Adobe photoshop wont even install on xp 64 Messenger live is another problem program as well as finding decent firewalls and virus checkers that work as well. Quote:

The list is growing. When the Win7 beta started it only had Norton, McAfee and AVG. Quote:
The only problem application that I have found is iTunes but that is pretty squarely on Apple and their crappy Windows support built into the application. Heck, It took almost a year after the release of Vista for them to get a version that worked on that OS. |

If all you do is gaming, most games will run in 32 bit and call it a day, very, very few utilize the 64bit. Also you'll need a 64bit processor, and there isn't any real reason to go to 64bit unless you need over the 4GB of ram. |
tried all ways to get messenger to work and none worked.
But ................ Finally got it working by uninstalling it and re-installing it.Very weird but at least got messenger working on windows7 Win7 is very smooth and i prefer this over Vista any day. My stats are as follows : AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad Core Processor 2.60 GHZ Memory *4 gig 64 Bit OS Yet i only get 4.6 on the windows experience Index Ive just built this system last week as well as i decided to upgrade to Quad chip from a dual core. My GFX card is PCI-e (NVIDIA Geforce 8500 GT |
In Windows 7, your experience score is going to be limited by the lowest scoring device. In your case its most likely your video card unless your hard drive is dog slow. You would increase that score by dropping a 8800 or 9800 card in there without too much expense.
My graphics card is an 8600 GT and it nets me a 5.3 on the experience scale. I don't think anyone really uses the scale at this time. At least not like Microsoft intended it to be used. |
