Let's talk about something?

I think this may be my first thread in the community lounge so please go easy on me. Rice, we love the stuff, we know it originated from china. or did it? Could the origins of rice and the paddy fields from which they came be a big fat conspiracy?

Your thoughts on the origins of rice from the paddy fields of china.

Edit: Sources close to my heart have stated that rice comes from africa but I'm sticking to my guns just for the hell of it they are wrong. Time to debate. :)

Dean C 11-22-2008 10:47 PM

I disagree with this post in whole and part.

SEOvB 11-23-2008 12:10 AM

I'd also like to refute some points that rice is not from China or Africa.

The domestication of rice started in India.

for the sake of a good debate and civil cohabitation, I support Shelley's argument and I congratulate her on her witty idea... [Mmmh... love rice!]

DieselMinded 11-23-2008 02:45 AM

KevinL 11-23-2008 02:56 AM

I have to steal the recipe from my GrandMa before... asap!

How to Make Rice with Milk

A dish you should certainly try, rice with milk. Many people have tried it, but not so many know how to make it. Here are the steps to prepare it.

Ingredients

* 2 cups of water
* 1 can evaporated milk.
* 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk
* 1 cup of rice
* 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
* zest of a lemon (optional)
* Ground cinnamon

Steps

1. Put the water in a pot with the rice. Bring it to a boil.
2. When the water is boiling, (add optional lemon peel),lower heat and wait for the rice to cook over low heat.
3. When rice is very well cooked add the vanilla extract 2 tablespoons, the evaporated milk, and sweet condensed milk.
4. Stir the mixture constantly until it reaches the desired consistency.
5. Let it cool.
6. Finally, serve it with a dusting of ground cinnamon.

Canned Rice? I've never see that here. Of course, I've never looked for it either.

DieselMinded 11-23-2008 04:18 PM

I wonder how that minute rice cooks so thoroughly , being in that bag with holes in it .

You would think the outside rice would be soggy and the inside rice would be not done , but some how it cooks perfectly

Spank 11-23-2008 04:29 PM

You can't beat a home made rice pudding.

That's funny, I would have thought in your part of the world you would be blessed with rice pudding, last time i checked, it comes in the form of a tubular tin/can. Either way, if you haven't looked then that would explain the reason why you've never seen canned rice.

Rice pudding, or as it seems to be called locally pudding rice, can be found in plastic tubs with other puddings and yogurt in the dairy section of most supermarkets in California. If you have a Vallarta (hispanic supermarket chain) nearby with a taqueria inside, you can probably find it freshly made. If your supermarket has a Hispanic Foods section, you might be able to find canned rice pudding.

We primarily eat brown or wild rice in my house. White rice has had it most of its nutrients milled out of it. Wild rice isn't the same as standard rice but is a close relative and native to North America.

If you like rice than you should try Quinoa and Amaranth. Both are native to South and Central America and were staple foods in that region until the settlers came from Europe and changed local diets to wheat and rice. These will most likely be found in the health food aisles of stores but could be found with other dried grains and legumes.

iogames 11-23-2008 07:16 PM

dunno man, but I've tasted many and my GrandMa's for some reason drives me crazy!

p.s. Thanks Shelley for this thread of solace :) [finally something on we can agree, tehehe... ]

From what I understand domesticated rice originated in two areas:

Quote:

Domesticated rice comprises two species of food crops in the Oryza genus of the Poaceae ("true grass") family: Asian rice, Oryza sativa is native to tropical and subtropical southern Asia; African rice, Oryza glaberrima, is native to West Africa.
I love wild rice and rice cereal (Rice Krispies). Rice Krispie treats are awesome!!! :D
