Ok, we are moving the site. My developer has done the upload to the new host but is getting "whitescreen" of death. He says he sees no php errors and has put a ticket in with the new host...

Any ideas? Is there a special routine for changing hosting companies?

Thanks much,

You say you have vb4.2? Do you have something like define('SKIP_DS_ERRORS', true) in your config.php? If so you might try commenting that out and see if you see any errors.

VBforumguy, you familiar with impex ..?

if yes,
1. upload impex to your root directory
2. make new database
3. get everything from old database, to the new one !

you are fine !

ask your developer to do that if u don't know..
otherwise, I can help you with that..

This is seriously bad advice. Given you seem to be new at least around here, that's understandable, but you may want to get some experience under your belt first before offering advice or even offering to work on other people's installations. You seem not to fully understand what using impex does.

Impex is not for migrating installations to new server/host. It is not necessary at all, and in fact has serious drawbacks. Most important: It will reset all your threadids, postids, userids and so on, and thus break all links to your site and damage search engine listing.

I'm not harassing you, and it is good to try to help people. But your experience is clearly limited, and although you may have used impex to import your site, it is quite clear you do not fully understand how Impex works and what its limitations are. You also clearly have limited knowledge of how to change server/host and what the suggested procedures are for this. That is understandable. But if you do not really know what you are doing, you should not give advice to others - advice which, in this case, is bound to damage their site.

who are you to say, "Your experience is clearly limited ?"
I've changed the host before, even 12 years old can do that !

you think you can judge people just because your title name "Coder"..?

cellarius 08-03-2015 04:05 AM

Your advice shows that, and I gave reasons why. Now, the question remains: If changing a host is so easy a 12 years old can do it, why do you give such bad advice? I just won't believe you're doing it on purpose, so I have assumed it must be limited experience. Of course, I always can be wrong.

Anyway, I made my point and have warned the OP to use impex for host migration. I'm out.
