View Full Version : [v1.6] Inferno RSS Forum Feeds Technology
Zero Tolerance
08-16-2005, 10:00 PM
This hack was made purely by request, and the fact IPB will have a similar system as default functionality, i wouldn't like them to have a upper hand to vbulletin ;)
v1.5 Updates:
- Auto detect RSS settings system
- Forum stats rebuilt correctly (last post info)
v1.6 Updates:
- Various bug fixes
Description:
This once added to your forum allows you to connect to any RSS feed you desire, once set up the system will automatically post data from the RSS feed into threads within a specified forum.
Previews are available at the bottom, and an FAQ is built into the admin controls since I know not everyone will understand how to set up the options. Also an example to use a BBC UK News rss feed is below :)
Example BBC UK News Feed:
Feed Name: BBC UK News
Feed Location: http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/front_page/rss.xml
Feed Prefix:
Feed From User: Assign users username of your own choice
Feed Forum: Choose a forum you want threads to be posted into
Feed Read Direction: Newest First
Parent RSS Tag Name: channel
Items RSS Tag Name: item
Thread Title RSS Tag Name: title
Thread Post RSS Construct: [b]Published: {XML[pubDate]}
{XML[description]}
}]Read More... ({XML[link)
Note: After adding a new feed i suggest clicking update for that feed, this will manually update that singular feed specified, the cron job included will automatically update all feeds, best not to have it update them all from the start otherwise it could execute a lot of queries. Further more I highly recommend you do not have lots of feeds unless your server can with-stand it.
Enjoy :)

I'm open for suggestions, i did look at the article bot, the only major difference i see here is the manual ability to construct the feed how you want, like which data will be used for threads, titles, and the post construct.

Zero Tolerance

Good resource, it finds sites and each result will have a button, which says "RSS", click that for the feed, if it's formatted like a normal website instead of code you'll have to view the source code to see how it's structured, from there on the help in the forum feeds control will help you set it up :)

That's because vBulletin uses a global variable for the time function (TIMENOW), the system adds all -new- feeds one by one, but keeps to the same time because of this.
If you want in the next version i can make it increase the last added time by 1 second, so the sort order should be correct :)

You'll want to look for the link ending with rss.xml and add that link along with the feed info into the rss feeds.
Look at the description at zero tolerance's Example BBC UK News Feed:

Suggest that to vB, thats how they built the cp nav system to work, nothing i can do about it i'm afraid.

No the BBC link worked beautifully. My problem is, he used RSS 1.0 as an example, many sites use RSS 2.0 which is harder to decode IMO.
I want Gamespot, IGN and Reuters, but they all use RSS 2.0 which I have no idea what to do with.

Great script - really. Unfortunately, my users HATE it. :disappointed: Why? Some have the "new posts" url bookmarked, and now they're seeing RSS feed posts mixed in there. I wonder if there's a way to set up a subforum where new posts, basically the RSS feeds, won't show up in the "new posts" search.

I set up a Scheduled Task (I assume this is a cron job in vB) and a cron job in my server. IGN and Cnet.com's RSS feeds work fine. However Gamespot, IMDB, Wired.com and Reuters keep showing no updates. I'm pretty sure they update their news frequently though...
Zero Tolerance
08-18-2005, 07:00 PM
Okay common error, running a task in scheduled task manager returns an error, this is due to vBulletin software itself, it's the same for -any- cron job when run via the CP manually, look on vbulletin.com bug tracker for more info on that.
Vizionz, its all dependant really on how much information the feed contains, if the feed contains a whole story then you can extract that, if it doesn't, then i'm afraid not.
People getting errors with bbc rss feeds? Seems to work fine on mine with no problems, i'll do a little more research into it :)

It would be great if you could choose to skip the initial import and only have it add news from point of activation on.
Also, I noticed that it just keeps track of the last title added in the db. Currently I want to implement a feed that is not keep up chronologically. It is a list of most popular news items within the past 6 hours.
For example it may say:
News title 1
News title 2
News title 3
News title 4
Then six hours later:
News title 1
News title 5
News title 6
News title 3
What I would like it to do is post what is new between the last feed and the current feed whithout, of course, posting what has already been posted, if possible :ermm:
Quite a bit more complex but tossing out the request anyway :D

It would require a lump of code being added into the includes/class_ffrss.php, however for v2 i can make it feed specific if you want, when adding/editing a feed you choose the desired subscription type for the user account posting the thread(s).

This is since the update.
This might be with vb itself since it applies to pages where there are more then one page of topics in any one forum.
I'll shoot this by vb.com.

<title>Faceplates Q&A</title>
<link>http://www.360on360.com/index.cfm?mode=entry&entry=CF28E126-C0CC-65D6-CFF5ECEFCFCBDC6F</link>
<description>A Q&A regarding the faceplates is up at Xbox.com, with lots of answers on the availability and customization of faceplates for the Xbox 360. Q: I was wondering if attaching the faceplate changes the software skins on Xbox 360, or are they just like a phone's faceplates?A: Across the entire Xbox 360 system, hardware and software integration has been a big priority, which means that for every Xbox 360 faceplate at retail, there will be a matching skin you can download. But to add a bit of mystery, not all the themes match their faceplate in exactly the same way. View Full Q&A Here</description>

@ GrendelKhan{TSU - Okay i just looked closer at your error: While attempting to parse the document located at "http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newson...nt_page/rss.xml" the system encountered the following error:
Invalid URL To RSS Feed Given
Please check settings related to this issue.
Note how i have made the whole URL bold to make it stand out, and furthermore, italic'd a section of it, that might point out what you have done wrong, if not then here's the problem: You have copied the url in my main post as text, instead of right clicking on the url and selecting Copy Shortcut, vbulletin strips the size of the url down by adding dots into the url ;)
@ ggiersdorf - Did you try the auto detect rss settings system?

man, I sooo wish that was it. I did copy the full url (and just tried again...just in case) AND tried about about 10 different feeds and all of them give me the same.
eg: this is the full url right?
htt p:// news rss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/front_page/rss.xml ?
(spaces add to prevent linking)
or this:
ht tp://n ews.nationalgeographic.com/index.rss
Something is causing the problem....and at this point I'm thinking it may not be the plugin (maybe a conflict with another hack??)
I was lookign forward to this one too...and your hacks all rule and you are pumping them out...so I can't really complain....
but its just frustrating . :( dunno where to start to solve this.

Zero Tolerance, wow, just wow. This is so incredibly cool. Thank you!
Is there anyway to limit how many articles it gets from a feed? Or how often it updates per feed? Would it need a cron for each feed? Like, CNN updates regularly but Wired not so much. I'm getting duplicate threads.
Also, it has some issue with getting a feed from Slashdot due to their formatting. Is there a way to set it up to accept it? http://rss.slashdot.org/Slashdot/slashdot
Is there anyway this could be hacked to post to a specific thread? Like say I had a weather thread and just wanted the feed to post at the end of it?
What about specifying the thread icon for each feed?

Anyone know of a way to schedule the removal of duplicate threads/posts?
(AdminCP->Maintenance->Update Counters)
I'd like to schedule this to run right after the feed update, only in that forum if possible (to keep load minimal). Tried to schedule "./admincp/misc.php?do=removedupe&startat=8000", but it laughed at me. This would probably be a bad idea for high traffic sites, but mine is just a little gathering place for friends.
The "dupe problem" appears to be more a problem with feeds, versus this addon. If an RSS file isn't updated, no new posts are made... But if one new item is added to the RSS file, all other old items will be posted along with the new one.
Dictionary.com's "Word of The Day" is a fun feed to encourage posting, get people to use the word in a sentence & enlarge their brains. I've been creating Word of The Day threads by hand for years, very happy this came along. Thanks a million.

It's never been supported, I don't think Zero supports many of his hacks.
you got to remember the kid is 17 and runs his own company so being a kid and having to update stuff that he has paying clients is his main priorites. when you isntall hacks here there is no guarentee that anyone will ever return to upgrade or help you with the hack. its on you once you install it
when he has time and goes over this stuff i am sure he will fix the problems that arize. but some of you dont understand that he has alot of hacks here already. he isnt vbulletin staff so he is in no way obligated to sit and constantly watch to see if someone cant use his hack. this is why this is a community your suppose to examine the hacks and learn from them. so you can help the community as well. this isnt the freemarket and everyone is constantly gonna walk you around by your hand on every little install . the hackers do this for fun and offer there hacks. none of them have to or need too offer any of this.
so when you see a problem post it and then wait maybe someone else can help ya or maybe when the creator has time he will help you.
but always keep in mind they have lifes too and other projects to run so when they dont jump to fix your problems dont make it out like they dont care
zt is constantly giving back to this community for nothing and i for one have all his hacks installed and i dont know if i am gifted or lucky but i dont run into any of these problems you people seem to be ?
maybe it could be many isssues when your throwing a whole bucnh of different hacks on one forum. and maybe just maybe this is all test hacks anyway so of course there are gonna be bugs in both the hacks and the actual system. so untill this stuff goes gold your trying these hacks at your own risk...

I think the real problem is the way VB.Org manages hacks. If I were to take this code, find the problem and re-release it, I'd get jumped all over, asking if I received permission.
What we have is a buggy hack that has been orphaned. The author hasn't been around to fix it and hasn't shown any signs of doing so, age or any other personal issue not withstanding. The hack clearly indicates that it isn't supported, so there is no reasonable expectation that anything ever will get fixed.
There should be a way for someone interested in fixing and supporting a hack to take it over. A released hack filled with bug and logic errors with no support isn't a hack at all.

all u have to do is contact a hacker and ask if you can help the real problem with rereleasing hacks is that people tend to take full credit for the hack.
and there is no need to rerelease the code you can attach your fixes already to the post. or add the coding necessary to fix the problem.
then when the hacker notices the additions he will accknowledge your help ya know

(I think this is the right place to post this)
Sorry for reviving this old thread...
I've been getting my head around this Mod over the last few hours, and at one point actually had it working well.
The only problem I initially, is that the DB Table wasn't created automatically, so I did it by hand (Not really a big deal, but clearly not how it's supposed to work).
After a few hours of playing around with it, I managed to succesfully syndicate my first 10 posts, and the results were good, but needed tweaking...
So I edited the way the feed was presented and was happy that it would look the way I wanted.
Now, I'm in the situation that the actual RSS settings don't seem to be logged by vB...
I can go into the DB and see the records there, but for whatever reason when I go into the admincp and attempt to manually update the feed or edit the settings, all the work I've done is no longer there.
It's a really weird one, because like I say, I can see the entries in the DB, they just don't seem to be recognised in the vB back end.
Have you got any idea why this might be?
As a side note, many of the titles have got HTML formatting in them, which output, completly unparsed in the post title after the feed is syndicated (I have HTML switched on in these categories).
Again, sorry for dragging up the old(ish) thread, but I would *love* to have this working, as I've been looking for something like this for a while...
Cheers, and I hope someone can point me in the right direction.
Oliver

One other thing someone was asking how not to exclude these posts in new posts or todays posts - do this.. if you have rss feeds in 16 15 and 23
just add &exclude=6,15,23 to the end of the do=getnew url and it'll exlude the forums with the forumids 6, 15 and 23.

I have to dissagree there. It will not accept any url I try. Getting this to work is on the back burner for me now but I would like to find out what is causing the error.
The dupe issue shouldn't be a problem to fix but I can't get to the stage where I can test the import and haven't trawled through the code for being lazy and hoping someone had a quick answer. Maybe not.

Not sure why items from some rss feeds duplicate, unless their feed somehow shows an older news item as a different story altogether. I have looked at the feeds that did dup on me, and couldn't figure anything out.
The only time it will dup for the feeds I use, is if we edit the article on the main site, thus updating the feed, so it would make sense that the script thinks it's a new item.
I haven't looked at the code for this, but perhaps adding a check to compare the title against news already posted would resolve the dup issue, if it's not already in there.

Awesome mod, thanks! I had a similar hack installed on my Invision board, and now I've got it back!
Question: Some feeds include HTML, and by default, I've turned off all HTML on all boards. Is there a way to have my poster account use HTML in posts, but not allow it for anyone else?

Same problem here.
If somebody had an idea how to resolve the problem with the special characters I would be grateful. Never realized how many of them are in a normale article. :ermm:
Just crossed my mind, I think you might have a problem with special charaters because there HTML characters and you don't have HTML enabled on the board your bots are posting into. Not sure, but that could be your problem!
I've noticed the "&b" space command causes problems and thats html

I get the same deal... but when I go to the actual Blog, they're there too... so I figured it's their problem. Oh and someone just released a plug that allows Usergroups the ability to use HTML. I changed it around to allow Usernames, so I just give my bot the ability to post HTML, so now people can reply to the articles without you worrying about them using HTML.

Zero is a great mod creator, one of the best around for vb. But I would agree with you. If your gonna release stuff, at least supply support for a little while. If it had of been an old hack I would expect no suport, but it's not an old hack.

This hack works perfectly for me: no duplicate threads, no funky characters (in addition to the ones already present on the actual blog), and no problems with HTML.
Don't diss the author just because you couldn't get the hack to work. I didn't say that Zero was a bad person for not supporting his hacks, only that he does just that, not support his hacks.

If that's a reply to me, I'm not dishing the author. I have installed many of Zero's hacks and use his Welcome Panel now. I supose if people complain about the suport, like you said it is advertised before they install it. That support is not there as backup.

Same here. Is there a way to get the output out of the new post search?

That only parses URLs into BBCode. I no longer need this now that I'm using a Plugin to parse a specific user's posts.
Ya I have tried a ton of different feeds, none of them will update. I think some things changed in Gold and this hacks does not work with it.
I'm using 3.5.0 Gold and the hack is working fine. There are no duplicate threads and no PHP/SQL errors. From my standpoint, nothing has changed from RC2/3 to Gold that will adversely affect this hack's functionality.
@Xtreme: RSS/XML feeds must be direct. They cannot be dynamic URLs.

I haven't updated from RC3 to Gold yet, but for those of you having the duplicate posts error...
Run the feed manually by clicking update feed, then delete any posts that were a duplicate, then run it again to see if there are more duplicates.
This solved my dup problem on RC3 believe it or not, after running it twice the cron runs never duped for me.

While attempting to parse the document located at "http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/front_page/rss.xml" the system encountered the following error:
Invalid URL To RSS Feed Given
Please check settings related to this issue.
I'm running into the exact same problem. In fact, I ran into a similar problem using phpBB and their "FIND" system on "DreamHost". The funny thing is, I help out on another site running phpBB on "Powweb" and it works like a champ. So I decided to do some investigating, and it turns out that "DreamHost" has disabled the "allow_url_fopen" functions in PHP. They say it's a security risk, and several RSS fetching programs would be affected. Furthermore, they are predicting that most host providers will disable this function as well. Apparently there is some way to use cURL to get around this, but I'm *TOTALLY* clueless when it comes to PHP. I have NO idea how to implement this, as to make this code work.
So I'm really hoping somebody is willing to pick up this project, and can design a workaround using cURL as a fall-back (or something to that effect). Not to mention troubleshooting the other problems some of you are running into now that you are GOLD. Until then, I'll just keep an eye on here and cross my fingers.

Well, it works on mine for 1 of my feeds, but fails on another, where on RC3, both of them worked fine. Something has changed enough in 3.5 Gold that causes problems. The error message is WAY too ambigious to tell us what the problem is.
The main difference between my feeds, is that one of them is has some ?'s and &'s in the URL, and the other one is a straight URL to the .xml file. I doubt that this would be the cause of the problem, but you never know.

Great, thank worked, thanks!
Hopefully there is a history and it won't post another 80 threads in 15mins.
BTW, my time for all those threads is stuck at updated 1 minute ago.
Is that becuase there were too many for my forums to process correctly / fast enough?

I think that's a cron job, so you may have to wait till it runs.
About the history, yes, it's working correctly.

I don't want to change the flood option to make this working.
The flood option is a good way to prevent spam bots or stupid users from spamming the board.
Zero Tolerance, couldn't you update this hack?
I think its really useful but with the actual bugs I removed it. :-(

Has anyone compared this against Article Bot? Have a preference for one over the other?
