how would i go about removing the rating colum?

Um, you just disable rating for that particular forum via the AdminCP

Admin CP -> Forums & Moderators -> [Forum Name Here] - > Edit

Scroll to the bottom, you will see the rating radio button, switch it off and boom! No more ratings column :).
